Two Sport Athletes

Hi all....was wondering what the frequency of athletes doing two sports at the Coast Guard Academy are. Our son is a state wrestling placer in California and is also a state level Track and Field athlete. While his resume warrants D 1 offers, he wants to do both sports in college. Most D 1 programs we've spoken to say it's highly unlikely they'd support him doing two sports. We are all very high on the service academies, as I am prior service, and hear that the USCGA is a place that would let him do that.

If anyone has experience with this scenario, please share.

When I was up there for a visit many of the cadets told me this was possible as long as the sports were in different seasons. They said that I would just need to contact the coaches and check to see if it was ok with them.

My DD was in the same dilemma, as she wished to continue both of her sports at the collegiate level, and D1 schools would not allow it. She was recruited by CGA for both volleyball and softball, and is currently a 3/c on both varsity teams. It works out for her as the two sports compete in different seasons, and both coaches are agreeable to the arrangement. There is some overlap in the off-season with both teams, but it can be worked out. I would suggest your son speak to the coaches about the prospect of playing two sports. Feel free to PM me if you need any additional help/info.

Thank you all for the great information! I think we've gotten the answer we were looking for.

My son is an incoming wrestler ... you should contact Coach Bratland ... he's a great guy ... had talked to several other coaches at different levels ... didn't want to wrestle for anyone else

That's great to hear. How helpful was he with the application process?

Very helpful giving information and guidance most importantly honest answers ... as a parent and a coach ... it is tough to trust someone else with your kid/athlete ... Coach Bratland is a word and handshake kind of guy ... I wouldn't want my son anywhere else (actually he didn't apply anywhere else ... so you know what he wanted)
