Hello all!
I just received a type 1 afrotc scholarship and am now waiting to hear back from USAFA. Does anybody know if getting a type 1 is a good indicator of getting an appointment to the AFA? Thanks!

They are two completely different processes so it's not really possible to determine. There is more to a USAFA appointment due to nominations and geography. The same traits help in both paths, so it is a good sign but in no way a certainty.

Also, you only need to post a question in one area. Posting it in multiple threads is actually against the rules of the forum.

I don't know if deleting is possible, besides it's a great current question that can help others.
Stealth as always is right on and a wealth of information.
Type 1 scholarship is awesome! AFA is only one road. All roads lead to Rome. AFA is an extremely hard road.
There is a saying 16,000 + give or take are dying to get into USAFA. A Little over a 1,200 are selected.
And most of those 1,200 are dying to get out once they are in. ROTC for some is a much better road depending
on your long term goals. The current class of 2020 is said to have the highest rate of cadets leaving in recent history.
Some say the highest exodus ever. Whatever road lies ahead make sure it is the right road for you. Best of luck to you.

B52LTA - I am curious as to where you are getting your stats claiming that 2020 has the highest rate of cadets leaving in recent history? If you look at stats published in the USAFA newsletters, during the same time frame, start of BCT to 9/30, the class of 2018 had approx. 74 cadets leave, the class of 2019 had approx. 95 cadets leave, while the class of 2020 has had approximately 66 cadets leave making it the fewest in recent history. If you or others have access to other stats, please share.

First off numbers to date June 30th to November 17, 2016.

Many more will leave over the next few years prior to graduation. My facts? Really? Where are you pulling those numbers from (66) ? Really? Please put up your link that you stated existed, BECAUSE they are wrong and NOT current! (“stats published in the USAFA newsletters” )My facts are from the front line of USAFA.

Anyone at USAFA will verify my “facts”. Tread carefully who you call out K T M Dad.

I will keep my anonymity intact “K T M Dad” because I need too. But if you’re trying to get in a pissing match you picked the wrong person. I don't think this is the forum so please feel free to PM me!
The Class of 2020 as of this date has the most in history. Reach out to someone who knows before you comment. Like your DS class of 2019 when you facetime next. In the meantime please share your so called link. Thank you.

Congrats!
FWIW, DS has a LOA to USAFA (and USMA) and a type 2 AFROTC scholarship. Who knows what either are looking for any given year?

Wow! This was really uncalled for.

Here are the links direct from USAFA official website. Please see page 1 or page 2, depending on the pdf for the statistics. Additionally, as of about 3 weeks ago, the numbers in these official statistics were confirmed by my DD, class of 2020, when speaking with an upperclassman, who stated there were 1099 in the class of 2020; so, down another 3 after 30 Sept 2016.

Class of 2020 stats: 66

What? Wrong! 1099 was not the starting number. Made up number by you. Other numbers are close. But the 2020 class was 1168 see Stealth's post here.

B52LTA,

You are correct -- 1099 was not the starting number for the class of 2020, that was the current class number as of late October, if you would have read my post correctly.

Not looking for a fight; just ensuring the original OP has facts to base his/her decision on.

And, as with every class since the beginning in 1954, yes, many more will leave from all four current classes before their 4-year academy experience is over.

Good luck to your DD class of 2020.

Of course Capri not looking to start a fight with anyone. Best of luck to your daughter 2020.

If you think I "called you out", then I apologize as I thought I was very respectful in trying to clarify enrollment stats as there are a lot of people who come to this site for information. If you have access to more accurate enrollment numbers, then good for you as all we have what is published each month. I appreciate Capri20 posting the information I was using for my stats.

FYI: Below are the stats I used based on USAFA newsletters and starting numbers gleaned from this site and USAFA FB posts. If you have different numbers, please share. This site is to be an asset to those looking to attend and attending.

Class of 2018 2019 2020
Approx. Started: 1,206 1,252 1,168
As of 9/30 1,132 1,157 1,102
Dropped 74 95 66

(Sorry it isn't formatted better, it looks correct when I am previewing it)

My son had both and both are great vehicles to serve your country and get a great education. My son chose USAFA for him it worked out. He thought he wanted to be an Areonautical (sp) engineer. When he got to USAFA and had to declare a major, he chose Political Science and International Relations, or something like that. After taking a few engineering courses he knew he did not want to go that route. If he had gone AFROTC, I doubr he would have been able to switch majors and stay in the program. Just my 2 cents. Hopefully, it gives another perspective.
