My son is applying to the Air Force Academy and has a remedial from DodMerb requesting information about his braces. He will be a senior in High School and the braces will be off by Christmas.

The orthodontist is asking if it matters whether my son has a fixed retainer or removable retainer when he enters the military. The orthodontist would prefer to use a fixed retainer, but says he can structure the rest of the orthodontic treatment so that my son has a removeable retainer if necessary.

Would appreciate any advice about the type of retainer.

Thanks

Current orthodontic appliances (mounted or removable; i.e., Invisalign®) for continued active treatment. Permanent or removable retainers are permissible. Individuals undergoing active orthodontic care are acceptable for accession (including DEP) only if a civilian or military orthodontist provides documentation that active orthodontic treatment shall be completed prior to being sworn into active duty. Entrance to active duty will not occur until all orthodontic treatment is documented to be completed.:thumb:

I am completely new to all things military, so could someone clarify for me when active duty begins? Is this when you enter the AFA or is it when you are commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant?

And does the completion of the orthodontic treatment refer to the part of the treatment when you are wearing braces or to when you no longer are wearing the retainer?

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply!

Thanks so much for your response.

I'd also left a message on the DoDMerb system and they called earlier today, so I'm all straight and will pass the info on to the orthodontist.
