Is one type of nomination is better than another?

Is a Senatorial one better than a Congressional one? Are some Congressional districts more competitive?

And lastly how does a service connected nomination work?

The way I understand it is that each is a different "pool" of applicants competing against each other? I really don't understand how the service connected one works though.

All noms are created equal. And you only need one. The pools do not compete against each other. If you haven’t already, suggest you go to the sticky threads at the top and review the detailed explanation regarding noms.

On the ‘nomination’ forum, there is marked I information at the top that explains what you are inquiring about.

If you have multiple nominations from different pools (for example, one congressional and one service connected) and are offered an appointment, are you notified from which pool (nomination) the appointment actually came from?

Not typically. Use the search function above to read the many threads about this. It doesn’t matter where your nom was charged. And knowing doesn’t change anything.

The only nomination I know of that might carry greater weight than others is an enlisted soldier nominated by a General Officer (not a common occurrence). The candidate still has to be 3Q. According to an admissions document I once read, the file of such a candidate will receive close scrutiny.

All other nominations are equal, although I think there can be a "chicken or egg" scenario with the VP nomination. Since the nominees are selected by admissions, they can go to candidates without other nominations that USMA wants to appoint - they got the VP nom because admissions wanted to offer an appointment rather than they got appointed because they had the VP nom.
