Hi everyone!

I was just wondering what types of classes (and/or electives) USMA requires plebes to take?
I took several AP classes throughout my high school career, including AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics: Mechanics, AP Computer Science, AP Calculus BC, and AP Calculus AB...will I have to retake a lot of these classes as a plebe if I am accepted?

Thanks for the help!

Yes but you are going to graduate in four years so it can be hard if you switch too much or to a major that is completely different (history to engineering) but it is allowed

You can switch but it becomes tough to do so if you try to pick something completely different. Your course load is already so heavy, you don’t have a lot of room to take classes you might be missing required for a new major to graduate and you won’t get an extension like other colleges. You have to graduate in four years barring extenuating circumstances. If you validate classes, take summer classes, or are willing to take a heavy course load, it’s doable

Are you able to double major at WP? For example, I would like to major in both economics and computer science.

You can but it’s not highly recommended. You will carry a very heavy load (17-19 credits) and have military and athletic obligations on top of that. You’ll welcome having what little down time you snag. A minor may be good, but two majors is likely counterproductive.

17 would be considered extremely light here--we had a talk from a mechanical engineering student who took 27 one semester because he decided it would be a good idea to study abroad as a MechE.

Some majors are easy to double (ie: DSS, languages) however if you're doing anything STEM-oriented it's pretty much impossible.

Also take into account that some majors have a "maximum" quota every year and that prospective applicants for that major interview, and get formal invites. If you were to try and transfer into that major later there likely would not be any openings. Transferring into non-stem from stem would likely be easier that the other way around. Not saying it can't be done, but if you look thru the WP "Blue Book" you will see that once you enter COW year, it would likely be difficult to change because of the core classes needed in any particular major. You would really have to load up credits, and normally if you take more than 21 "academic" credits you need DAC approval.

JMHO, but unless you are talking the FLEP or USUHS programs, your major should probably not have a great effect on your Branching or career path..:)
