Just curious... Once commissioned a 2LT how long until they reach 1LT. Is it the same for ROTC, OCS and Academy graduates?

For the AF it's the same, two years time in service, regardless of whether you go through the Academy, AFROTC, or another source.

I can't speak authoritatively to how the Army does things, but an educated guess would be that it's a similar situation.

Here is an unofficial response to the question found on google. http://usmilitary.about.com/od/promotions/l/blofficerprom.htm

I would welcome input from current (or recent) active duty personnel on the details described within the article.

My experience was that the USMC promoted slower than the other branches. Perhaps because of a smaller number of officer slots or something else altogether.

There is also the matter of the lineal list of all officers within the USMC. This ranked listing determines the order in which officers are promoted. It is a complex ranking which calculates your number based on factors like college GPA, TBS rank, time in service, time in grade, etc (I don't recall all the factors). I believe academy graduates have, by law, a commissioning date ahead of all NROTC and OCS graduates which gives them a leg up in this listing. They also get to TBS ahead of the NROTC grads so this contributes also.

I may not be doing this process justice. I fully admit my memory on these details is foggy and stand ready to be corrected.

The timeline is the same for all three as far as time between 2LT and 1LT, it is based on TIS from their activation date. USMC does have an advantage since they activate upon graduation so their TIS starts earlier.

I believe the timeline has changed back to 2 years from activation date to move from 2LT to 1LT. I am not positive about this, my son had told us he just made the cutoff for the 18 month promotion timeline but nothing was official at the time.

My older son graduated in 2012, he activated on May 25th 2012, he made 1LT exactly 18 months later, Nov. 2013.

The promotion to 1LT is automatic, the promotion to Captain is not as automatic as it used to be.

Correction is needed for AF.

Promotion for ROTC grads is not two years from the date of commissioning, instead they will avg out your commission date and your EAD. This is what is referred to as Date of Rank or DOR. Promotions forever will be based on that date. When you make 04 the line number assigned to you is based on the DOR. Typically the SA grads have the lowest line numbers. Bullet's line number was always the highest because of his DOR, thus an SA grad will be getting that pay months before we ever did. It took 10 months for him to pin on, whereas others started pinning on shortly after the list was released.

I.E. our DS commissioned May 25th, reported Sept. 30. His O2 date for pin on is July 15th. AFA and OCS grads go ADAF right away thus their pin on date is commissioning.

The longevity pay is also figured out differently for AFROTC because of the delay in reporting for AD.

Wow that is fast.

AF they make O3 at the 48 month marker. Has been that way for decades. They have a 90%+ O3 promotion rate.
~ Don't get your nose dirty (DUI, etc) and you pin on at your 4 year DOR.
