Typical to receive additional school scholarships in addition to NROTC? Honors? Etc

Thanks @Go Dores! for the countering details. Read up a bit further and agree/ sounds like in nearly all cases the Navy scholarship is applied to tuition. It's other branches that have more common options to apply either/ or, like AROTC.

I recommend candidates check with each college for the exceptions and where tuition is lower than room and board and the college allows it.

Always open to data that will help these young people and their families make informed decisions.

On a 4 yr scholarship, and then got merit based scholarships through my school that covered room and board. Additionally applied to over 100 private scholarships in high school, which I got 5 of them, which doled out about $10,000 over four years. Definitely possible if you want it !

DS has an NROTC scholarship, which covers out of state tuition. The university awarded him a merit-based scholarship they have for out of state students, which was applied to on-campus housing costs his first year. Since then, the funds have been directly deposited into his bank account each quarter, so he can use it however he needs to.

Yes. Have completed Fasfa and CSS. That’s kind of my question. Say EFC is $30K. School costs $40 K $16k room
And board. Say You get scholarship from Nrotc covers tuition. Is the family then responsible for room and board? Or would financial assistance be likely? This is so confusing.

DS lost his merit scholarship when he was awarded an AROTC scholarship so we are on the hook for room and board. But the school was such a good fit for him that he chose to go there, despite being offered additional scholarships from other schools. Bottom line is the school has to be the right fit if they are going to succeed. Money isn’t always everything.

Our DS was awarded NROTC Oct. 30. The school he selected offered NROTC full coverage for room and board. He was accepted by them before they got the NROTC notification and they offered 30k per year in Merit for 4 years. Counselor advised that as soon as they got the paperwork from NROTC the funds would be applied toward his room and board and lab fees etc. Should be enough to cover rise in cost that will occur over the 4 years.
He really wants to not graduate with a lot of debt, and wants to serve so this will accomplish that. He applied to schools that would offer R and B assistance. Norwich has been great with the process and communication so far, very personable. Now he just waits to hear from 4 academies.

I believe the NROTC scholarship will cover lab fees, as they are mandatory fees imposed by the school.

My daughter's school disqualifies students who get an AROTC scholarship from their merit-based scholarships but they do give a $7500/year room and board scholarship to ROTC scholarship recipients which covers about half of these expenses. I think they do this because their merit scholarships are intended to cover part of tuition and fees which are being paid by Uncle Sam. So between college savings, summer jobs and the ROTC scholarship/stipends, my DD will exit college debt-free. Not bad because the tuition and fees at her school are pretty insane - North of $70k/year.
