As one can well imagine the application for being on the National Historic Registry is a long and involved process. There are two National Register listings for the United States Merchant Marine Academy which may be of interest. The academy’s central quadrangle is listed as a National Historic District and the William S. Barstow Mansion, which serves as the American Merchant Marine Museum, is listed separately. There is also a third report titled "Character Defining Features Report for USMMA." All these documents can be found (and downloaded as PDF's) at the link U.S. Merchant Marine Academy National Register Nominations. One caution, all these documents are quite large due to their large graphical content. As an example, the "National Register Nomination for USMMA Historic District" is almost 45 MB. Use caution in downloading and depending on your bandwidth, anticipate potential long download time.
