Today June 17th we celebrate the 124th birthday of the Navy Hospital Corps. Happy Birthday to all the Docs out there. Glad you were always with us but even happier I didn't need your expertise!

Their critical role stuck out to me since my 3/C cruise when one of the sailors told me the ship could go underway way without the captain but never without the independent duty corpsman.

Known better in the Brigade for providing those SIQ chits for mids that have a respiratory infection/a paper due at midnight they haven't yet started. 😅

A sweet boy. A decent runner a bad basketball er. He vol for VN as soon as the announcement hit.,Then after talking to his wife withdrew his request. He was 18 at the time.

A few months later he arrived in VN anyway. Six months working at CMed. Then he had to pick a line outfit for the rest of his tour.

His picked recon because his best corpsman friend.was there.

Killed in his first and only firefight with Charlie company.

From a Marine decades later: ”the fire was so heavy it was knocking down small trees”

Dick did was he was paid to do and what his Marines expected any of their docs would do,

Charlie company had gone back out to retrieve a dead Marine they could not recover the day before, Dick was killed , shot in the chest, while working on a wia Marine,

Never forgotten

A few months after Dick Roach was killed with Charlie co .

Malcom Miller. He was a member of Alpha co (not H&S)

The last, words he spoke to the marine next to him as Malcolm bled out and an overwhelming number of nva attacked——

“hand me my rifle”

Then he died.

His remains were recovered decades later along with the other missing.

Now buried at Arlington

Never forgotten

Nearly 700 navy corpsman Kia in VN. Over 3200 wia. Some of the names here.

Most not all but most wia or Kia while serving with the Marines.

If you want to become loved in life (and in death) become a Navy Corpsman who serves with Marines in combat.

EDITED: not that it matters to folks here but Doc Dick Roach above post was a member of Bravo not Charlie company. The boys of bravo would want me to get this correct.

Another navy doc lost , this one lost on a jump. The marines on his team saw his chute drift off from the others due to high winds.

the Marine pow garwood claims that doc was brought to a pow camp in happy valley in the danang area.

No word as to what happened to him or if garwood was correct .

He may well have been——garwood would have know what a navy corpsman was.
