I have been told that you are not a real Military Academy because you are not subjected to the UCMJ. In a battle with friends about it. I say yes you are. Congrats on your Football win Sat.

KP is not a military academy. You are not subject to UCMJ. You’re are not on active duty.

We are a Service Academy though.

Thanks..IAW the UCMJ, KP is, but it is not enforced. Trying to defend you guys, even though you are a mix bag of tricks, so to speak.

No. KP mids on campus are not subject to the UCMJ. Period.

There is also nothing to “defend” it’s not like being subject to the UCMJ makes you superior. I don’t understand what a mixed bag of tricks is.

By definition there are 5 Federal Service Academies. All 5 are US Government institutions. Of the 5 - only the USMMA midshipmen are NOT on active duty. They carry reserve ID cards and - just like all reservists - as well as National Guard - are NOT subject to UCMJ unless/until brought to Active Duty.

And just like everyone in the Guard or Reserve - this does not in any way, shape, or form denigrate or reduce their service.

Thank you. Great explanation. My son is a cadet at USCGA and my father is a KP grad. Both are great schools. All that attend have much to be proud of. I was rooting though for CGA on Saturday. Lol

Thanks everybody..Folks I know were talking you down. I got tired of it and wanted to fight back. My phrase mix bag of tricks was more of a ref to civilian/military spin to the school and its complexities. It was not meant to be derogatory. I have to go back and eat some crow on the UCMJ thing, but I will get over it.

I always kind of felt like this made us "real".

"During times of war, members of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard engage in combat, but the students at their respective service academies do not. However, the students of the USMMA receive an integral part of their training at sea, and in the Second World War often found their lives in peril as they sailed through enemy-controlled waters or unloaded precious cargo in overseas combat areas. In all, 142 such cadet/midshipmen never returned to home port."

No self-respecting service academy graduate would disparage another beyond good natured joking, because they know what it takes to get through any of them.

Love it..Thanks..Also, Merchant Mariners were the first war time sailors..My respect..I'm a CGA Mom..I got your back..No issues with our Cadets, just some adults that I know, who don't understand..

This is %100 true. My father was a 1944 graduate of KP. During his sea terms he went to war. He told us stories of being a student and having to demonstrate the "new" dry suits to the guys on the ships. KP students and grads are vital to our country.

KP has its own battle standard, the other Academies carry the battle standard of their service but do not have their own ... enough said, that’s all the “defense” I need.

KP is truly the Acta Non Verba of the service academies!

I don't think we need you to defend us from anything. It's pretty obvious that KP midshipmen are not subject to the UCMJ, which service academy did you attend?

If you're going to talk to your friends about KP, maybe you should focus on how much higher KP grads' starting salaries are than O-1 pay out of the Coast Guard Academy.

Relax, the game is over. Also, no one attends a SA other than KP for the starting salary. Without the non-taxable income, we know we don't make all that much in comparison. It's not why we choose to serve. Looks like OP was just attempting to educate others on KP as a service academy and correctly came here to offer a BZ to your institution and either confirm or deny her opinion that midshipmen are subject to the UCMJ.

I will ditto trackandfield08. But, to the above post regarding money, I really believe that most of the KP students attend out of a sense of service, and not solely for a paying job at the end. There are many other schools to get that paying job, without having the regiment etc to deal with. And, if the only goal in attending KP is for the money, I would say you are misguided. Is the opportunity to "choose" a service, or to choose active duty or reserve duty and choose employment right out of school a benefit--Yes. But to make a statement, or blanket statement, that KP should talk about the starting salaries, misses the point a bit.

To my fellow Kings Pointers:
Stop getting so defensive! Every service academy has its pluses and minuses. It doesn’t matter if you graduated from USMA, USNA, USCGA, USAFA or USMMA - you are part of the same team! Even the State Maritime Academies have pluses and minuses and similarities, even without the federal government piece. This isn’t a competition. I have worked in the industry, and know many wonderfully successful people who graduated from each school. Be thankful for the opportunity to get this quality education, and be a part of the solution of keeping our nation great!

Absolutely, props to yourself and your fellow coast-guardsmen who selflessly followed the path of service: tending buoys, interdicting drugs, SAR, and marine inspections; you all truly sacrificed for our nation, whether your duty station was LA-Long Beach, Miami, or Seattle...your service is highly distinguished and most honorable. I salute you.

All of those are important things so...

You're not very good at being a troll.

Agreed! I should have clarified my post a little bit, MMA does provide great financial opportunities that the other SAs do not, but that is likely not the primary reason for attending KP. Like the other SAs, there is a good bit of "sacrifice" involved with respect to letting go of the traditional college experience. As most of us here know, the Merchant Mariner lifestyle can be a rough path that falls in line with those who choose to go active duty. Long voyages, months away from home and loved ones, long hours of watch in less than ideal weather conditions all geared towards making sure almost 90% of the world's goods reach their final destination. I have nothing but respect for those who choose to enter the commercial shipping industry.

You forgot to mention ice breaking, cleaning up other people's pollution, and providing harbor patrols for 4th of July fireworks displays...as well as duty stations in Hawaii, Guam, and Charleston. But hey, I don't expect you to be an expert on the Coast Guard anymore than I expect you to be able to invoke one of your institution's core values and provide a respectful response to anyone on this forum. I can help you out a little: https://www.gocoastguard.com/about-the-coast-guard/discover-our-roles-missions

For the record, if you don't think risking or losing your life to save another's is sacrifice, then I'm not entirely sure you understand the meaning of the word.
