Under Waiver for Review- what steps should I take?

Hey Everyone,

I was selected for an AROTC scholarship for this fall when I will be a freshman. AROTC is an excellent opportunity and something I am so excited about. :)

However, DODMERB disqualified me because of my history of anemia and a recent blood test which shows that my hemoglobin levels are just barely up to the standard to be considered healthy and not anemic. The anemia used to be a big problem for me a few years ago but I have not had trouble with it since the problem was resolved. Although I do not have any symptoms and am completely physically competent, the blood test was a huge red flag for DoDMERB. I bike 12 miles to work five days a week for a demanding landscaping job that gets me overtime. I never get get chest pain, extreme fatigue, dizziness or any other symptom of anemia. I am completely at a loss as to what to do. Should I take another blood test and send it to DoDMERB or have someone (like a doctor or employer) who knows I can perform at my best despite being borderline anemic?

Thank you for reading. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Bumping this... I have my blood test tomorrow for this exact reason. My previous levels, such as when I donated blood, were also barely at minimum levels. I have no problem with it as well, and I was unaware of it until I donated plasma back in 2020. What was the solution to this? And is there any way I can avoid a possible DQ ahead of time?

Hello All, my daughter has the same issue for AFROTC. ie DodMERB disqualified her for anemia. Is it possible to apply for a waiver or remediation?

What’s the cause of the anemia and how low is her hemoglobin and hematocrit?

We dont know the cause. She is symptom free but the test indicated that she was anemic. She had tested positive over 2 years back and she took iron pills for a few months and it disappeared in the next test. The DodMerb report only says she is disqualified but does not give the numbers.

Her hemoglobin results from a 2022 exam was 10.8 when the normal range is 12-14. We are enquiring about her Dodmerb results. Thoughts?

You don't apply for a waiver. If AFROTC wants to grant a waiver or investigate a waiver they will do it. Likely they will request some additional medical information(AMI) from your DD. If it was just the results from 2 years ago, then you might be good and not need AMI. All you can do is wait and see at this point

the results from 2 years prompted a DODMERB blood test which resulted in a DQ. We do not have info on the metrics from the DoD test.

Hello, here are the results that we did based on doDMerb request. Will she be eligible for a waiver?

She’s just barely below the standard.

It’s possible for her to get a waiver, but the reason for the anemia has to be looked into a bit.
