What are Plebes given when they first arrive to Navy? For example are they given rucksacks, running shoes, rifles, backpacks, laptops, camelbacks, etc?

Comb back through the Induction Day threads over the last year or so. You’ll see descriptions and photos of all the stuff. The saying is you can pretty much report in with what you’re wearing, ID and a handful of paperwork, and everything else gets issued.

Some stuff is “given,” others, such as issue laptop, is paid for through pay deductions.

Excellent advice from @Capt MJ as usual! Also note that we're in a new normal now. The Class of 2024 were issued items at different times than previous years due to the way Plebe Summer had to be rearranged for the quarantine period, etc. Who knows what will happen for the Class of 2025 and beyond, but rest assured, you will have everything you need for the summer. As @Capt MJ said, lots of threads address this. Before summer starts, the incoming Plebes will receive information on what they are expected to bring. They did suggest the Class of 2024 bring a few small and specific items, but this was due to COVID and the resulting supply issues. They'll let you know well ahead of time what you need besides ID and your paperwork, if anything. We have sent very little to our Plebe so far with the exception of snacks.

The simple answer is every Mid is given what they need at the right time. When Plebes report they start off day 1 with boxes and the large white bag you see in the photos in this thread. That is white works (which is the main uniform for Plebe Summer), sneakers, PT gear, socks, underwear, t shirts, watch belts, canteens, etc. When they get their rooms there are boxes of books, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene. Each Mid is issued an inoperable M-1 for drill. Mids would be issued "field gear" such as a ruck sack, body armor, etc. when specific training calls for it. They are not issued it at the start of the year or Plebe year to keep. For specific summer training it would be issued and then returned. Certain summer training like sailing requires storm gear and other items... they would also all be provided to Mids.

As Mids progress through Plebe Summer they will be fitted and issued all the other uniforms that are needed from leather shoes to covers, formal uniforms to working uniforms, winter jackets to working jackets, belts, gloves and everything you can possibly wear throughout your 4 years. At the end of Plebe Summer (in non-COVID times) they are issued a laptop, monitor, etc at the end of Plebe Summer which they will use for 4. Mids are issued backpacks also. Camelbacks I do not believe are issued, but could be later on for summer training. Just to note, Mids technically pay for all these items throughout their 4 years. It comes out of their pay.

DD had an early report time on I-Day — 6:30 — so made it up to her room with all her stuff relatively early. She spent a lot of time folding socks, t-shirts, socks, pants, socks, underwear and socks. So yes, as others have said, you’ll get everything you need, and more. Especially socks.

This cracked me up. My plebe said the first 5 days he was solo in his room during the initial quarantine. To stay busy, he rolled, folded, and then did it all again. He said he is very proficient at folding, rolling, and stowing all things issued. Why didn't he ever try that at home????
The only thing we have sent him since arrival is some snacks, and two sets of thermals. Pretty much the only things they long for are mom's cooking and liberty, without Covid.

When I first moved to NYC in the late 80s, I went to the laundromat at 82nd & York to do my laundry. I still had my mesh laundry bags with my alpha code on it. Folded my underwear, t-shirts and socks the way I learned during plebe summer and put it all neatly in my mesh bag. People looked at me like I was an axe murderer.

I still use my original issue laundry bag to take my clothes to the dry cleaners. I still fold my shirts the same way. My closet is so organized, dark to light, left to right, that my boyfriend and friends make fun of me.

We were given way more stuff than you would ever need. You could show up with your ID and paperwork on IDay and not need anything for at least a semester
