Anyone with any experience with this unit? - particularly as an athlete at U of C.

Hyde Park is about 8 miles from UIC so I realize there is that factor to consider.

Can anyone provide a bit of a summary of life there, typical schedule, etc?

This would be a perfect time to advise one to pick the school rather than the ROTC program.

I know several graduates, of different vintages, of U of Chicago. They all say, with varying degrees of seriousness, it's where fun went to die.

Haha. I have heard that one. Do people actually pick a ROTC program in and of itself? I wouldn't think so.

I believe UofC gets about 38,000 applications each year for about 2500 offers. So, you might want to get the word out to them. :)

I have friends who are U of C grads and have visited there many times. Certainly, a lot to vet with UofC. Highly ranked education balanced with all that Chicago brings. Beyond the school itself, was trying to get a feel for what AROTC would entail there particularly if one is in a sport.

No doubt, it is an extremely highly regarded University that has a well earned reputation. A degree from there is on par with any and all of the other 10-15 elite schools that come to one's mind. It has a beautiful campus. Every building looks like the Law Library at U of Mich. However, it is a bit of an island in Hyde Park, which is also a bit of an island in Chicago. Because of the isolation, enjoying Chicago is a bit more of a chore as would be getting to the UIC circle campus. There isn't an El stop a few blocks away as there is in Evanston for the NU students. Maybe that will change with construction of the Obama Presidential Library which, last I read, was planned for a park adjacent to campus.

I literally copied and pasted the following from my post on a different thread:

Please keep in mind that even if the current PMS is awesome, the cadre at almost all AROTC battalions rotate out every few years.

It is more important to choose the best fit for the school, rather than seeking the best Army ROTC unit.

My DS had three different PMS officers during his four years of college, and he learned valuable lessons from all of them.

I did a poor job in presenting my question. I should have been more specific. How many AROTC cadets are there at UofC? How are the logistics for getting to UIC for AROTC? Is everyone just on their own as far as transportation? How often do you have to travel to UIC? Anyone doing a sport, how is the relationship between AROTC and the athletic dept (I realize this will likely differ by sport)? How often/regularly are you doing training on weekends? Any other insight on the current function, weekly commitments, etc of the unit would be appreciated.

Great questions. Exactly the kind you should be asking the primary source — the AROTC detachment itself. Can be the PMS, can be cadets, can be the operations person. Either way, you’ll get the straight scoop probably more quickly and more accurately than from folks here. U of C is an awesome school (says someone with a degree from that school on the North Shore), but I’m guessing you won’t get many anecdotes —or even hearsay — here on SAF given its size.

Some AROTC battalions have gold bar recruiters. These are typically newly commissioned second lieutenants assisting in recruiting and miscellaneous chores while waiting for their BOLC school to begin.

U of Chicago is a rather “interesting” school. I’d be happy to discuss via pm.

Many years ago, I worked on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade, before the days of electronic trading. Here is a gross generalization of the demographics:
Pit brokers, the gentry, were descended from generations of pit brokers with a deck, but zero education bona fides. Pit traders were football players from ND and the Big 10. The boss managers were the smart guys from Northwestern and ND. The guys, and I mean guys, tweeking the Black and Scholes option valuation model in their cubicles on the 21str floor were from U of Chicago.

The pit trade is negligible, the boss managers are fewer and farther between and the quants from U of Chicago run the show have expanded their turf far beyond anything envisioned in the 80's.

Black and Scholes
Yikes! Haven’t seen this term since my B-school days “up the lakeshore,” where I suffered through a rite of passage called Financial Decisions. The decision I made afterward was to not go into finance (“fuh-nance,” as the bright ones at U of C say). 🙄
