Universities to apply to with AROTC

Good afternoon everyone,

I was recently not selected for an AROTC scholarship after the second board. A flaw in my application may be that I only had one school of Intent listed.

I am from Wisconsin, with few high rated colleges with an on-campus ROTC program. I apologize for sounding rude or arrogant, but when I am helping patients and commanding soldiers, I want to be the best I can be because in those moments, that matters most. That’s when the quality of the science programs becomes so important.

With the ROTC scholarship, could I apply for out of state schooling? I was also wondering if applying to certain schools would increase my chances of getting the scholarship?

@emmarose - you can list up to 7 schools on your application. Now that the 2nd Board is complete, you can go in and change/add to your schools listed. Remember - If you are selected for a scholarship, the scholarship with pay for tuition & fees OR R&B (up to $10k/year) - regardless of the cost. So, lets say you want to go Vanderbilt because they have a great nursing program and AROTC program. If you are selected for the Scholarship, your tuition at Vanderbilt will be covered. I am not sure if it still the case, but at 1 time CC wanted at least 1 in-state school and the rest could be out of state.

You still have time, do some more research and put down some more schools that meet your academic and ROTC requirements.

Pick the school you want to go to, the ROTC unit is much less important. The schools that you apply to should not have any impact on IF you are awarded a scholarship but will impact WHERE you are awarded the scholarship to.

Thank you. I wasn’t sure exactly how it worked because I have always wanted to apply out of state but cost is the worry. I will research more and pick more schools, thank you so much!!

@emmarose - Go the link below and look in the left hand margin where it says "FIND SCHOOLS" - start your research there. There are many schools that offer other financial incentives to scholarship winners. Some will even cover room and board for winners. Some will also pick up the 1st year if you are awarded a 3-YR AD.

The out of state tuition cost should not be an issue with the scholarship, but take some time and research all of the other benefits that certain schools give scholarship recipients.

You can use your scholarship at Norwich University in Vermont, birthplace of the ROTC program and the first Senior Military College. Those who arrive with scholarship in hand, also receive the General I.D. White scholarship to cover room and board.

I’m new to this, but aren’t college admissions closed for the fall? Of after you receive a ROTC scholarship can you apply to more schools?

I think you are right that the vast majority had 2/1 deadlines for regular decision. But some schools are rolling admissions until 4/1, and I was told by one ROO that if a scholarship is awarded, he can call and get the winner admitted even if no application had been submitted. But I think those instances are rare.

Ok, thank you.

You're school choice has no impact on your chances of being awarded the scholarship. Awards are made independent of school choice, then school choice is looked at to make awards to certain schools.

See these instructions from the application as to the spread between in-state and out-of-state schools:
  • When selecting school choices, the application process requires that 3 of your 7 choices are public colleges or universities. If you select fewer than 6 schools, then 2 of the 5 choices must be public colleges or universities. 3 or fewer choices, 1 must be a public college or university.

Got it thank you. That is good to know, I would have applied to colleges I do not have a lot of interest in thinking I would get a better chance at a scholarship being in the higher percentile.

I got a 4 year my senior year to a school I ended up not picking and was able to transfer it very easily. Unless the program is one of the very large and competitive ones such as VT or an SMC, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to assume you will be able to transfer it if needed.

Oh thank you! Congrats on the scholarship!
