My DS is currently a NJROTC cadet at Gaither H.S. in Tamp. He plans to apply to the Naval Academy. If he does not get an appointment, he will apply for a NROTC scholarship. One of the schools that we have on our radar is the University of Tampa. The University of Tampa Navy ROTC program is associated with the University of South Florida NROTC program. I guess that means they muster and train together at some point, but I am not sure exactly how much and in what way they coordinate. Obviously, USF is a HUGE school and UT is a tiny school, so I can understand why UT needs to affiliate with a bigger program. Does anyone have any experiences with the UT NROTC program in general (not just how it coordinates with USF) that they can share with me?

Your best bet for answers would be to call the respective units since how affiliates train with the main unit varies so much by college. I'm sure you're loking at a minimum of once a week training together for lab. If PT is included along with Naval Science classes t could easily be 5 or more days per week. Some units provide transportation. In other units you're on your own. Maybe someone here will chime in but the unit is your best source of information.

Just to clarify, you indicated that if your DS does not get an appointment to USNA, he will apply for the NROTC scholarship. Strongly recommend that you do these simultaneous and not as an 'if he don't'. The NROTC application is now open for current juniors who will be seniors in the fall. My experience, my DS applied to both. He received word of his NROTC scholarship after the first Boards, so he knew he had that early Senior Year before he even knew if he got into the schools he listed. He remained in the running for USNA until late March. Honestly, by the time he received his rejection from USNA he was so committed to attending his first choice University and using the NROTC scholarship that he wasn't upset. My point, you don't want to wait to see if USNA is a go, because you could be waiting well into March or April and by then, you could have had the NROTC scholarship application submitted.
So I don't know much about USF or UT, but my son's school has cross-town with another school. They meet two mornings a week for PT...one is battalion, the other is company. They also meet 1 evening per week for Drill. There might be the question of where the NSCI classes are offered, I would assume at UT. There is also a requirement for study hall hours etc...initially for freshman until you demonstrate that you can attain the GPA. Plus other events that might be on USF campus.

Thanks. I agree that we will be applying to USNA as well as about five other schools and for the NROTC scholarship all simultaneously. I have read many stories of students who love their NROTC experience so much that they decide not to reapply to the USNA after 1st TWE.

I dont have specific information on either school and their Rotc programs. However, based on the fact that USF is the bigger school, it probably means the Rotc activities are probably located at USF. That means that possible early morning PT and Rotc classes are held at USF. As someone else mentioned, sometimes schools have transportation that will take them back and forth and sometimes they dont and it is up to the student to get there. Depending on distance, traffic and scheduling, it can be a hassle when you have to travel to the other school

Very good point. He will apply to both schools. UT has the advantage of small class sizes. Fortunately, the morning traffic pattern is favorable in going from UT to USF (against the flow.) But you are right, it could be a hassle. He will apply to UF in Gainesville too.
