So an update, since I know frequently there are discussions about vision waivers that never get a final resolution.
My son applied for the service academies but never got far enough for any of them to submit him for a waiver.
He did however receive a 4 year army ROTC scholarship which he accepted and headed to Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. For army ROTC his DQs were D155.7 (myopia greater than 8) and D155.40 (distant visual acuity that does not correct to acceptable standard). He is also color blind but only in Navy's eyes.
We sent him off to out of state VT with best hopes (well, the parents had very little hope but the son thought he could overcome bureaucracy and get in). They submitted him for the waiver after quite some time. He passed the fitness requirements and was just ranked among the top 3 cadets of his company of 26. But today a waiver denial came in. He will finish the semester and withdraw from the Corps.
His prescription was:
-13.75 -3.00 x 022
-11.00 -2.75 x 155
so at least he was under the astigmatism limits!!
He had a 35 ACT and 1580 SAT. He enrolled in engineering. He had a great recommendation from an eye doc. we hoped the army might let him get ICL to get under the limits but it appears not.
Anyway just wanted to throw this out there for future people searching for vision waiver info like I was last year.
