Urgent AFROTC Majors Question

Hi,

So my AFROTC scholarship application will be going to the board held this Monday, which means tomorrow (Thursday) is the last day I can edit the listed majors on my application.

I've looked and looked, but couldn't find a clear answer to this: when offered a tech scholarship, can you choose from the 3 tech majors you listed, or do they just pick one for you? I've read different answers on different websites/forums. I listed my majors as 1. Computer Science 2. Physics and 3. Chemistry. I really want to be a Physics major, but I figured my chances of getting a scholarship would be higher if I listed Computer Science first (and I really need that scholarship, since I'm headed to an Ivy).

Although I've read that it's not terribly hard to switch between tech majors, I'm feeling a little worried. As in, what if they really want some Computer Science majors, and they reject the proposed switch? My combined SAT score is 1550.

Thank you so much!

The hard part is not switching majors, it is switching types of majors. Once on scholarship, tech majors stay tech and non tech stay non tech. Non tech are harder to come by but not impossible (I got one). Make sure you can handle a tech major before listing even one in your scholarship application.

@classical774 from what I understand it shouldn't be a problem. Tech to tech or nontech to nontech is supposed to be easy. The problems come up when you try to switch from tech to nontech.

It won’t matter because when you accept your scholarship you get to choose majors from there. That’s how it was on my portal when I accepted mine

Switching from CS to Physics or Chem should not be a problem. Of all the STEM majors, CS is the least academic ie you don't necessarily need the sheepskin/degree in order to be a competent programmer or system-level architect.

Most Physics and Chem majors would allow you to take the core CS classes as part of your electives or even your distribution requirements.

I think what you listed all fall in the STEM Science and non Engineering. So with those Majors your best chance is T2. That is $18,000 plus fees and books.

Air Force gives out 10% T1 mostly to Engineering Majors and very few Liberal Arts.

T2 10-20% in mostly STEM Science and very few Liberal Arts. Comp Sci Physics Chem all for here.

T7 to remaining any Majors.

My DS got T2 with a History Major. He put Aeronautics as second choice and they gave him his first choice. He’s got the same SAT 800V 750M. Also to the Ivies.

You cannot change once you submit. I think you may try reapply to change in Freshman Year to see if they upgrade it. But not easy from what my DS was told by MIT Detachment. Good luck.
