This is just getting more and more tragic and absurd every day. What next, North Korea had a right to invade South Korea? Or Comrade Stalin's murderous purges were absolutely correct and reasonable? Nazi Germany was just defending itself from Poland in 1939?

Again, just imagine the reaction of the Republican Party if the black, secret-Moslem, secret-communist, not-born-in-the-USA President Barack Obama had so strongly praised the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Ronald Reagan is rolling over in his grave.

"WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump seemed to misstate the former Soviet Union's involvement in Afghanistan on Wednesday with a convoluted account that sparked ridicule on Twitter.

"Russia used to be the Soviet Union. Afghanistan made it Russia because they went bankrupt fighting in Afghanistan," Trump said during a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. "The reason Russia was in Afghanistan was because terrorists were going into Russia. They were right to be there."

The former Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979 to prop up Afghanistan's then- communist government, which was battling anti-communist guerrillas. The U.S. condemned the Soviet move and eventually helped the mujahideen rebel forces. Under then-President Ronald Reagan, the U.S. provided the mujahideen with anti-aircraft missiles, among other assistance."

How is this normal?
How is this morally defensible?
How long are we supposed to look down at the ground, shuffle our feet and mumble something about 3 percent GDP growth?

Simply put: it is not. And neither are many other things. I truly hope my duly elected representatives will do the right thing

Why are we in Afghanistan?

Was Bin Laden our friend years ago?

What is the ultimate goal there?

"The reforms we seek would bring greater competition, choice, savings, and inefficiencies to our health care system."

You are trying to divert the topic of this thread.

Probably because you cannot defend the position of America's first openly pro-Soviet Union chief executive. Whom is also, somewhat contrary, America's first president to openly praise Nazis ("...very fine people...").

"The reforms we seek would bring greater competition, choice, savings, and inefficiencies to our health care system."

So he misspoke.

Are the reforms he seeks good for the country? Would you support those reforms if he said efficienciesnjnstead?

nobody supports the idiotic changes obamma put out there

President Obama never openly and proudly praised the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. No US president in the last 40 years has. Nor has any democratically-elected national leader since 1979 has ever celebrated and supported the Red Army invasion of that country. In fact, both democrats and republicans alike have always denounced this effort at expanding the Soviet communist empire. Foreign nations with little in common, like China, Israel & Saudi Arabia, all have opposed that Soviet action, too. No current national leader (save for one) has made statements approving of the Soviet Union's foreign policy of armed aggression.

President Reagan worked to funnel billions of dollars of aid to the Afghans opposing the Soviet Red Army and, until now, this was always thought of as a good thing. Apparently Ronald Reagan was pro-terrorist, according to the revisionist platform being peddled from the Oval Office in 2019.

No American president has openly supported Soviet empire-building - until now.

Is there any legitimate defense of this pro-Soviet speech given yesterday by our nation's current commander-in-chief?

How can evangelical Christians, some of the president's most ardent fans, square their support with the POTUS' open admiration for the communist Soviet Union's 1979-1989 war effort in Afghanistan, and its efforts to implement atheism, in that nation?

How can the anti-communist platform of the republican party, untold yesterday a given for 100 years, be turned upside down overnight?

Should we just ignore it and hopes it goes away? Is that what is best?

Steering the topic to the issue of Obamacare (or phony birth certificates or anything else) won't wipe out from the history books the strongly pro-Soviet (and, now, pro-Russian) sentiment of our current head of state.

No American president has openly supported Soviet empire-building through T-72 armored strikes - until now. It's official US national policy in 2019 to laud the 1979 Soviet invasion. I can't believe I'm even typing these words!

 I do. As do a majority of Americans.

LMAO

Too bad there isn’t an honest media that tells the truth to Americans.

I wonder if they support the spying on citizens, journalists, political opponents, judges, etc?

Trump has had an investigation against his administration since day 1. For interference in the 2016 election using foreign agents and Russians?

Meanwhile, that’s exactly what happened. With the other candidate.

It’s all a scam.

Follow the money. Tell me why the legislative branch ... both sides of the aisle ... have members worth hundreds of millions of dollars on 150k salaries. Not all of them started wealthy.

Edit: I’m not trashing the military or any one side. Not looking for problems. I am on this site for my DS who wants to serve our country.

While I heartily disagree with you that Trump is not 100% in bed with Russia (and Saudi Arabia for that matter), for reasons that are more about accumulation of personal wealth than ideological/political, I do agree with your assertions regarding the corrupting influence of money in Congress.

Consider the immense expense of purchasing (or even renting) a home in DC. How can you afford living in one of the most expensive zip codes in the US, while also having (for purely political reasons) to maintain a home in your home district or state, on that a $174,000/year congressional salary? Answer: Campaign contributions!

Use "campaign contributions" to establish a tax-exempt committee for re-election. Hire your spouse or adult child to "manage" it. Pay them salary of $200K! Pay other family members six figure salaries to "work" for the re-election campaign. Yippee! Have this re-election campaign lease cars, rent tony Georgetown townhouses ("campaign headquarters"), etc. using campaign funds. Have good accountants make sure you don't co-mingle funds (ahem, Congressman Hunter Duncan Jr.). Spend lavishly on restaurants and bar tabs, i.e. "entertainment expenses" for the committee. Need to travel? Don't worry about airports, TSA, waiting in lines, cramped seating, etc. Your wealthy campaign donors, oops - I mean constituents - will "lend" you the use of their private Gulfstream IV for private travel. Similarly, vacations to magnificent oceanfront estates (owned by those same "constituents") are available at no cost.

Of course, no such thing as a free lunch - you'll need to repay (with votes, not money) the big pocketed donors to your re-election committee. So what? In the interim, you'll live like a millionaire.

No other democracy on earth functions like this. The US itself didn't for most of its history.

For the record, like yourself I'm a military veteran who got on this forum initially as a means of helping my DS get an officer's commission. We have that in common, at least.

I’d like to see any evidence that Trump is 100% in bed with Russia. I have an open mind.

The fact is this ... if Russia influenced the 2016 election, unless Trump is proven to have known this - it falls on Obama.

The simple question is this ... why didn’t the former administration contact Trump and say “here is what we know about Russia and some Americans. There are a list of potential people we are observing, including x,y and z on your campaign”?

The answer is simple. Trump wasn’t involved. And “Russia” is made up to justify the spying. Look at all the former FBI and DOJ officials that have been removed. Look at their lies to Congress.

I hope we get to the bottom of Benghazi, pay to play, and the the lost emails.

I support Trump - and think it is time to clean up Washington. I supported Obama (though I admittedly disagreed with him on most everything, despite that I am a registered Democrat).

More proof you should have to take a test in order to vote.
(comment directed at those on both sides of this "issue")

MOD NOTE:

Perhaps my last post was not crystal clear.

The Obama administration tried! In fall 2016 the admin had a bipartisan meeting to try to organize a joint statement and plan to push back against Russian interference. McConnell refused and said that if Obama said anything publicly about the he would accuse him of interference and of trying to steal the election.

And if you remember this was going on at the same time that Trump was saying that the election was going to be rigged against him.
