Does anyone know when Cadets become eligible to use USAA and the proper way about going to set up everything with them as a Cadet? Thank you

Once you are accepted. "USMA cadet" is a selection on their site for your military position. They will ask you to submit proof of military service which is a copy of your USMA acceptance letter. You can upload this right on their site.

My DS was able to open a USAA account at a NC USAA branch as a "Cadet" candidate. They also printed out the 1199A. However, he did have to make a deposit. But I also heard you can call 1-800-531-8722, let the phone Representative know you are a Cadet appointee, you will need to upload your id and other pertinent information from your computer. (info originally posted by Capt MJ) And by phone, you were not asked to make a deposit at that time. My DS used his ATM card to make initial deposit. Also, we were able to open a joint account, separate from Cadet account, that helps with transferring money if needed and I'm eligible for USAA benefits too.[emoji4] Great Service, I hope you get the same.

Thank you both very much for the information. Extremely useful!! Have a nice day!

DS applied online for USAA. It took 2-3 weeks to obtain a checking account and set up direct deposit as required by USMA. the USAA online portal did not allow for a cadet option, and USAA online representatives would reply to our requests that he was not eligible. however, with persistence and waiting 3 days between messages, USAA finally had us download to their site the information they wanted - SSN, birth certificate, letter from USMA, - and passport, which we did not have. The ONLY problems with USAA were the long delays between messages, and then having to sign in again with temporary passwords.

I just spoke to a CC yesterday who is having trouble getting USAA to recognize him as eligible for membership. This is the first time I've run across this. They've been super easy to work with, so I was surprised to hear this. Sounds like AirsoftRanger ran across the same thing. Anyone else having similar issues?

See current Bank Accounts thread via Search.

There seems to be some confusion within the organization on how to process. I think the main point in the reference link on Bank Accounts that was made by CaptMJ, if you get a rep that is confused, you may want to escalate. Be prepared for a business call and to upload your DL and appointee letter if done by phone, the process will take awhile but easy. And make sure it is set up as "New Recruit" or "Cadet" account.

If you're not yet 18, you'll need to create a joint account with a parent. This is what happened with my DD. When she turns 18 in August she can go out on her own.

My DS won't turn 18 until August. USAA allowed DS (we were on speaker phone with him) to set up a 'New Recruit' account last Friday. He had to upload all the previous mentioned documents, DL, appointment letter and such and needs to wait a couple business days to verify it all. They even linked his new checking account with his savings so he can do all his banking needs through the phone app.
My DS has had a joint USAA savings account with my DH & he is also under our USAA auto insurance so maybe that helped.

Strange. They would not do that for us. DH is a federal employee and has had his USAA account for a long time but they would not sign up DD on her own. I'll have to call them again. DD does not want to be tied to us!

FWIW DS visited campus this week; stopped in USAA office on way out. They set him all up but he cannot activate the account until he accepts his appointment. So if you can get to a USAA office in person it may be easier than trying online or on the phone. All they wanted to see was his appointment letter which he pulled up online for them.

Hope this helps !

Yay, my DS got his "Welcome Cadet Kit" today from USAA and a USAA member# card. Looks like the account is set (finally) Originally, we had video conference in NC at a Ft Bragg branch, left with our checking account number and 1199A form and made a deposit, then received the ATM card. However, I did have to resend the DL and appointee letter by Fax. Hopefully, this will go the same for you by either phone or video conference. (maybe they have worked on/out the process better)

Please tell your DD to call up 800-531-4610. This is the number that Debra Dalton provided and DD was able to set up an account over the phone. DD is only 17 (will turn 18 end of October). She uploaded her letter of appointment and passport. DD had to make a $25.00 deposit though using my Bak of America debit card. Once account is set up, you can download and print signed SF 1199A from USAA.com. I am neither a Federal employee nor a military personnel.

That has been the USAA Career Starter Loan number in the past, at the Bank, and usually finds the most knowledgeable team about cadets and mids from SA.
