Wasn't sure which forum to choose for this, since it crosses over more than one. Just went with this one. I was just curious, since I haven't posted anything since 2017... Of the group who were gunning for either USAFA or AFROTC for the class of 2021, where did you end up (if you are still checking these forums)?
Our path took a direction we honestly didn't expect. Like all other applicants and parents, we were biting our nails nervously, waiting those last few months of senior year 2017, hoping to hear something soon. DS finally got word that he had been offered a Type 1 AFROTC scholarship. While DS and I were actually on campus tour at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Prescott, he got word of his TWO appointments to USAFA! He suddenly had big decisions to make!
As USAFA was a huge dream for the vast majority of my DS's adolescence (since he joined Civil Air Patrol at 12), it always just seemed like a given that it would be his choice, if given more than one. Well, surprise! After much contemplation on future goals and all other factors, his decision ended up being AFROTC at Embry-Riddle! We could never have dreamed that would be the direction he would go, but it ended up being 100% the right one for him.
DS is now a junior (almost senior) at ERAU. He has completed his field training and, first semester of this year, his first leadership assignment was as Flight Commander of Echo Flight. In December, his flight was chosen as Honor Flight!! This semester, he is Deputy Flight Commander of Alpha Flight. He started out pursuing a major in space physics, and actually did remarkably well with it. However, at the beginning of his spring semester of his sophomore year, he decided to switch his major to applied meteorology because, under physics, he literally had no life outside of constant study.
He has managed to keep just a smidgen under a 4.0 GPA throughout his time at ERAU. He joined Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and has been the philanthropy officer in that, for the past two years. He was just inducted into ERAU's Phi Kappa Phi honor society. It's still hard to believe it's going by so quickly. And I thought his HS years did!! They have already submitted their dream sheets for post-grad commissioning.
Future goals for DS, after he graduates May 2021: His first goal has always been and continues to be AFIT. It will still be a while yet before he can find out if he will obtain that, but with his current grades and his command staff being impressed with him as a cadet, it's a strong possibility. If so, he plans to pursue, at minimum, a masters in either Space Systems or Atmospheric Science. Either way, his ultimate goal is 13S (Space Ops), which will now, apparently, fall under a Space Force commission.
Anyway, just a little update on things in our world. If any of the parents/students from the Class of 2021 group (either Academy or ROTC) are still hanging around here, I'd love to hear where your DS or DD ended up!!
