USAFA appointment statistics

Understood. You're not the first nor will you be the last. I have met senior military officers from other services who don't even know the CG has an Academy much less where it is.
I'm just continuing my small part of educating those I can on our wonderful service.

I can't speak for all areas in the west, but I can say that in AZ at my DD school, there are 5 USNA, 3 USAFA, 1 USMA and 1 USMM

Maybe it's the lack of water out here that draws them to USNA.

Maybe its the drought I hear about out west, so they want to know what water looks like ;)

Though I often wonder is it that they have a better PR machine, have been mentioned more in the news or maybe because they have been around longer?

My DD has a Congressional nomination for USAFA. Does it help her at all if she has a Presidential nomination also?

For some reason, there are a lot of retired marines here.
But you're right, USNA's PR machine is well-oiled.

In a way, yes. Each nomination gives the academy an additional place to slot her before she gets moved to the national waitlist.

OK. I will "Concede" that there is a possibility, albeit extremely slim, that a MOC could provide a slate of 10 names and NO ONE on the list is qualified. I've never heard of it happening but it is possible. I would have to defer to Steve; "Flieger". He's been an ALO a whole lot longer than I have. But I've never heard of it happening.

19 years as an ALO, I have NEVER heard of such a situation.

I suppose it's "theoretically possible" but what would be the benefit?

Clarification: For some reason there are a lot of retired marine where I live and work.
<<didn't want to imply that I don't appreciate input from marines on this board - which would be a very bad assumption! :thumb:>> I'm just surprised at how many of my friends are marines & they live in the desert!

I understand. Most of the retired military I know of and live around me are army. And most of those are not career, but either ROTC with required duty or one tour. I knew one navy at work, one air force (spouse of a friend), and one marines (father in law).

Just my personal observation thru having a son at USAFA in his Senior year. There are a lot of cadets from Cali, Texas, Colorado and other western states. I don't know what the ratio is to USNA and USMA.

I wonder if the statistics are different out west, as logistically they are closer to the USAFA and thus students may be more aware of it.

We live in New Mexico. DS was told by the Congressman that USAFA was the clear 1st choice in the state. Accordingly, while at the interview, a retired Admiral convinced him to switch his 1st preference to USNA. He did receive that nomination, and was later telephoned with an "offer" for an additional nomination to USMA, since there were only 4 candidates interested.

FWIW, he also received both Senators' nominations for USAFA. No appointment yet to either school.
