I recently accepted my appointment to USAFA and I've been preparing physically for the past month or so. I recently picked up boxing and have been hitting the heavy bag and working on the basics. I've come to really enjoy it and hope to continue boxing at USAFA and I'd like to know more about opportunities to do so. I do know that boxing class is mandatory Doolie year. Does anyone have more information about the boxing team and how competitive the tryouts are. Does boxing recruit? Are most people on the team people who have been boxing for years or people who have picked it up with less experience and been trained at USAFA? I appreciate any and all responses.

I visited USAFA last year and during which I spoke with the boxing coach. I also hope to box at the academy, since I’ve been boxing for a few years now. When I talked to the coach, he said they do not recruit since boxing is no longer apart of the NCAA. He also said some do come with experience, however there are a lot of cadets that join the team with no prior experience. I’m not sure how competitive tryouts are but if you continue to practice before going you’ll probably stand a really good chance of getting on the team.

Our son has been on the boxing team since he arrived there. He did not go expecting to try out, the boxing coach pulled him and others aside and asked them to come to the try outs. While it’s probably somewhat competitive (that year I think they had 30 for 6-7 spots) I would also say most of them do not show up with specific boxing experience, so given your story I would expect you will do well.

The program is excellent and they do very well nationally. The coaches are phenomenal and you can expect a wonderful experience, like our son has enjoyed.

Good luck !!

I got my first glimpse of the boxing team when I went to the Army vs AF game in Dallas this past year. The guys and girls were amazing on both teams. I had a blast standing with my senior as he rooted on his fellow wingman throughout the night. If you’re up for the challenge and big time commitment I say go for it.

During my BCT(this previous year), they polled us and asked if we'd like to try out for the boxing team. During our BCT PT time, those interested were sent down to the boxing gym for tryouts. The tryout process allowed everyone to learn how to box properly/effectively so everyone had a good chance. Tryouts also didn't fully end until a few weeks after the Ac year started.

My son was afraid of boxing at USNA - he didn’t want to get paired up with a girl and get his butt kicked. I would have paid tickets to see it.

During boxing - he was excited if he gave his opponent a bloody nose or if he got one.

My son has said many times he wished he stayed with boxing, JKD, and wrestling when he was a kid instead of basketball.

I reached out to Coach Baldi about a week ago via email, but I assumed that he would be very busy preparing for NCBA championships. Now that USAFA has brought home the championship (Go Falcons!) hopefully I'll get back a response. Thanks to everyone who offered advice or information about the team!

Congrats on your Appointment to USAFA! Just curious...did you get your Appointment from Sen/Congress or Disabled? Also, did you also have a Presidential Nom? Was your parent in over 20 years?
