USAFA Cadet Exchange Expectations

Good Afternoon,

I have the opportunity to participate in the cadet exchange program at USAFA this fall. From the initial minimal information I've learned I'll be equivalent to a second-class cadet. Coming from a SMC, I think I am a little more accustomed to some of the expectations of a service academy, but will be the first to admit I think I'm going to stick out like a fish out of water, as this was my first year in AFROTC. I was wondering if any current or past students had any experience with exchange student from AFROTC programs; willing to provide a short narrative of the experience and what sustains or improves you would have for them. I was wondering what I should pack/ allowed to pack, i.e. a minifridge, or if I'll be able to bring a car up. Am I expected to participate in leading the incoming fourth-class cadets or take more of a observation role?

Other inquiries: Will I have a chance to participate in the Soaring Program, or what opportunities are afforded to me or restricted. How much civilian clothing should I bring and how often am I permitted to wear it?

Some of these things are just normal cadet things, as a second classman you can have a fridge (but only one per room, so your roommate, which I assume you get, may already have one.) The only restriction on civilian clothes is you cannot wear them during the duty day (0700-1645). Other than that you can wear them whenever. Soaring and jump happen pretty exclusively during the summer and getting an AY slot is pretty hard. Don't count on it. They may make an exception for you, but likely not. Second classmen can keep cars on base.

You are the first ROTC exchange student I have heard of - so CONGRATS! It is normal for ROTC students to participate in summer programs at USAFA, but it is neat to see them widening the exposure to SMC for the Academic year. I do not know how long they have been doing this. Historically, the academic exchange had only been for other SA and International Service Academies.
