USAFA Class of 2027 Waitlist: Keeping the Hope

Good Afternoon All! Just heard back from admissions, and it was also a no. Nothing in my portal changed, no email, I just clicked on my open golden envelope from before and this time it was a rejection letter- figured I'd let everyone know that was what it would look like. I wish you all the best!

Well, my DS also got the disappointing news today. He will now be attending the University of Georgia. He has an option to transfer to Ga Tech in a year. But I’m super proud of him because after his disappointment, he’s already talking about reapplying. I’ll be trying to research some of these forums about reapplications because I know nothing of that process. Best of luck to everyone. Y’all are, and y’all have, some amazing kids!

@johnsmith27 and @Bamagirl33 I am truly sorry you and your DS respectively received the disappointing news today. Since you were on the waitlist, I have the utmost confidence that you are very talented and will thrive wherever you go. When one door closes, another door opens.

My DS joined the class of 2026 as a reapplication. If he had gotten in initially he would have been class of 2023 and be graduating shortly. He entered older wiser and more grateful to be there. He chose normal Doolie classes as he self-prepped. He took Chemistry, Physics, Calc3, A full year of German. He took a few Engineering classes and Biology. When he finally got to USAFA he was grateful it wasn’t his first college experience.

My nephew went to Auburn and was in AFROTC. He's now a major flying Vipers. It is an excellent program.
Fantastic!! My son really wants to continue swimming, too, even though he is not D1 fast (yet), so is looking forward to the Auburn club swim. The detachment there was so welcoming and really inspiring for him when we visited in March. It is still an amazing Air Force path which is his dream. Do you know, did your nephew have to get a private pilot license in order to be competitive, or did he get enough opportunities through AFROTC?

He didn't have a PPL. He went to Auburn without being in AFROTC. He went by the detachment in the middle of his freshman year, asked what he needed to do to get into AFROTC. They told him, so he did it. He got a 3 year scholarship, was named honor grad, then was assigned to ENJJPT. He got his first choice of airframe while there. And as far as I can tell, he is having a blast.

Awesome!

Does anyone know the percentage chance of getting in USAFA? I read 11% online. Harvard is 5%… university of Virginia is 21% (all according to the internet)…

This is a loaded question, but for serious applicants who would meet true minimum criteria for the schools, it is almost 50%. I think it all depends on how you classify yourself. Male, female, white, minority, reapplicant....
You can carve the numbers up in SO MANY WAYS to get to the real number of seats you are competing for. Here is a recent class profile:

Do you compare yourself to everyone who requested an application? 1428 out of 11559 (12.4%)
Do you compare yourself to the people who COMPLETED the application? 1428 out of 11261 (12.7%)
Do You compare yourself to the people who were considered QUALIFIED? 1428 out of 3279 (43.5%)

How many seats are you competing for? In this example they offered 1428............. but 180 went to prep school students, so that means you were never competing for 1 of 1428.
As you carve it down, you see how many slots you have a realistic chance at. Diversity initiatives are not new, and trends are fairly consistent - so what do the numbers say for your gender or ethnicity?

I say all of this to either make you feel good about your chances, or to humble you about your chances -- all depending on how you choose to view the published data.

Hey guys, not sure if we’re still updating the table, but I got a falcon scholarship offer after being put on the waitlist. So, if someone could put in today’s date and accepted, that’d be great. Also anyone who is planning on going to GMC this coming year, that’s my school of choice too, so I’d love to talk!
