Hi everyone,

apologies for the lack of knowledge, but can anyone explain the difference between a USAFA Counselor vs a Liaison Officer? How would you use each one and what kind of questions would you ask to one vs the other?

The USAFA counselor is just that: a counselor at USAFA. Think of them as the ultimate point of contact if you can't get an answer with your ALO. Thse folks, and there's only 10 of them for the entire globe, are absolute experts. They're also really busy so...go to the ALO first.

The ALO...we're there to be your mentor, your main point of contact, your source of information, a sounding board, and so much more. We might not have all the answers, but we have almost immediate access to the folks that DO have all the answers. We're here to help you achieve your goals.

And some ALO's are also evaluators; we evaluate YOU after you've completed most of the application. NO, we're not the enemy, it's not our job to "weed them out." Our job is to evaluate the candidate and then build a picture of them so admissions can say "okay...we see the paperwork, and now we have the impression of one of our ALO's...we have a solid picture of this candidate...let's discuss...."

That's the "short version."

Thank you for the detailed explanation!!!

^ Then you go to the counselor after using various contact methods and allowed enough time for a response. ALOs have jobs, families, and even real lives too.
