USAFA hair female cadets

And relaxed showers in civilian life are very different from military showers in any kind of accession (civilian-to-military) training environment, regardless of service. Time will be short. I would brush my teeth in the shower, do a quick towel dry of my hair (those quick-dry hair towels as-seen-on-TV were the best, still are) and bun/braid while damp. It would still be damp hours later. When I had a chance, I’d let the hair down and work the hair chamois through it again.
 
From what I understand...pretty gross, pretty easily. Think lots of sweating, lots of dust and dirt, extremely short showers with water that is not necessarily warm, putting it up in a bun wet so you can hit the ground rolling at wakeup call...and maybe you have part of the picture ;)

I personally haven't seen it happen, but some of the Basics will get scared of this and won't wash their hair. I had to force my basics to wash their hair nightly.
I personally would suggest keeping your hair long, because if you get it pixie cut, you will be fighting with your hair to grow out again if you don't like it short anymore. My friend got her's cut that way for BCT and hated Jacks cuz her hair had gotten just long enough that she couldn't keep it down anymore but was too short for a bun.
 
Bummer-upperclasswomen should be able to be recognized by their long(er) hair.

No concern really, just something the upperclassmen mids had that now...they don't. Sometimes one would like to reward subordinates with something that doesn't cost anything. In this example, seniority had a reward that didn't cost anything. Something that the lower class mids could look forward to. Now those mids have it. Kinda like a participation trophy.

I've never really thought of my hair as a participation trophy, but I'm not a mid or a Navy grad. The way they require female cadets to maintain their hair at USAFA seems to work just fine.
 
I am always curious if the mids (cadets, etc) even concern themselves with issues like this or is it just parents that seem to be bothered. I mean even if they can have long hair it still has to be put up, correct?

It seems like there are so many other important ways to demonstrate seniority and leadership other than hair length.

What I definitely saw through BCT this year via photos was those cadets who choose short hair had a definite disadvantage during the second half at Jacks.

In an equal world, they won't be able to require males to cut their hair either. If the girls are allowed to keep their hair, eventually a male will challenge the requirement in court and win.

Why allow long hair for the girls? Is it an attempt to make the academy more like a regular college? Will new applicants will be easier to entice?

The inherent restrictions and rigors of the academies are what has made them special for so long. Long hair whether on males or females, does not seem to be something that adds to successful missions, but in extreme cases could be a detriment or distraction.

It's hard to imagine a cadet or mid. Male with long hair, but it's coming. You heard it here first.
 
It would seem that long hair would be a major liability in any one on one interaction with the enemy. Nobody should ever be able to grab your hair in a fight.

Maplerock, a common statement from Air Force upper leadership is "People First, Mission Always." While long hair may not contribute directly to the mechanics of accomplishing the mission, it is naive to expect the Air Force to ignore all cultural norms and still be as successful as it is today. Acknowledging the needs of your members is fundamental to successful leadership, and yes, sometimes those needs may appear to be petty, but they are crucial to the identity and welfare of many members.

Yes, but only if you go for a longer short haircut that still can swing into your face. A true short pixie cut left my hair plenty short whilst crawling through the mud in Jacks, and it was great not to have to worry about it falling in my face and blocking my vision (the over side helmet did that well enough ;)) . I realize super short hair isn't for everyone, but if you've been considering it or think you might want to try it at some point, I'd make basic that point. If you don't like it, grow it out after. Now, if you are a long hair for life person and are good at taking care of your hair fast, cutting it is probably not your best option.

I find this impossible to comprehend. How could short hair be a disadvantage? All the men have short hair, are they disadvantaged as well?
Not trying to be combative here - but I can't fathom why short hair on a female would be a disadvantage in any way - especially at Jacks Valley.
Maybe this is a simplification, but from what I have been able to glean, this Jacks Valley thing is a 5-mile march to an FTX at various obstacle/training courses.
Sort of like USNA Sea Trials, but drawn out over eleven days.
I would think that short hair would be great to have, so I am confused.
