What is the protocol for picking your host family at USAFA? Is it done during in-processing? I have a few families I am considering, but I'm not really sure how the whole signing up works.. thanks.

The sponsorship will be a part of your BFE package. If you have several families that are willing to host you they need to become Academy approved sponsors. They need to initiate contact with Academy and fill out an application if I am not mistaken. They can then request you. You fill out a small application, basically with likes and dislikes, and then the Academy matches you as closely as they can with someone locally.
This a very basic synopsis, there will be phone numbers and such in the BFE.

We had friends in Co Springs that wanted to sponsor. They filled out the application. It is fairly short but does require 2 or 3 letters of recommendation - we were one of the letters of recommendation and requested the assignment as part of the recommendation letter. The sponsor must also request the cadet as part of the package. The sponsor also has to attend a half-day seminar at the Academy before approval. This was all done in May - before I-day.

There was very little communication after that from the Academy - in fact we got several calls from the friends because I-day had come and gone and the Doolie Day out day was coming (halfway between BCT1 and BCT2). Most cadets and families know by then - but our cadet was a recruited athlete and they all go with their teams on Doolie Day out. It was not until near Acceptance Day when they were officially notified. Our cadet heard after that.

Though our friends did not really know our daughter prior to this (they were close college friends of ours), we met up when we came for I-day and then for Acceptance Day. They have become such an integral part of her life in just a few short months. She is there most days she can go and loves it. In fact, she was there with other cadets this weekend because they all had a pass. The whole crew got fed and had some fun. Can't say enough about how good they have been to her. Hope that helps a bit.

My kids' sponsor parents (the greatest people on the planet by the way!) were friends of a friend, but we had never met them. In an unusual way, the sponsor folks became life-long friends with my sons, and their S. Dad read them the oath at commissioning. They hosted my kids all four years through holidays and breaks, weekends, etc.

Sometimes these things just click. This mom is forever grateful.

I know people who have had great relationships with their sponsors even though they were "assigned" and had never met.

Okay great to know! I really appreciate all of your input. I am excited to pick my host family!!:thumb:
