My DS received a call from MOC yesterday that he granted him his NOM. They also said that give a few days before it shows up on the portal. Now what!. Will he get something in the mail and how long will it take for the USAFA to decide and approve LOA.

Hard to say if he’ll get anything in the mail re the nom. Each MOC does things differently. As for when the LOA will be turned into offer of appointment, hard to say also. If the LOA was conditional on the nom, then rest assured that it will happen. Maybe not on the timing of your choice, but it will happen. Be patient, as there are many moving parts here as USAFA works to build a class and make the best use of the noms available to them to assign candidates.

Does he have an LOA in hand? If so, then he should be getting an appointment. The timing on that is dependent on how quickly USAFA processes the slate of the MOC nominations.

Thank you for your prompt response.

An LOA is a Letter of Assurance. It is handed out to prime candidates who are then assured an appointment if they meet certain criteria, usually obtaining a nomination. So your son would not be getting an LOA if he just got a nomination from your MOC.

If he has your MOC nomination, that means he is on a slate of up to 10 other candidates who were nominated by that same MOC. Depending on which method the MOC uses for his slate, the 10 candidates are now competing for one appointment to USAFA. The other 9 would go to the National Pool for consideration of excess appointments after all MOC slates are resolved. There are some good threads in the Nomination Forum here explaining the process.

What’s the difference between you letter saying principal nomination versus just nomination?

A principal nomination is the MOC's top choice for appointment. If a candidate receives a principal nomination and is 3Q'd, they will receive an appointment.

Only some MOC's use principal nominations. Many submit unranked slates of 10 nominations per vacancy.

Thank you. Can you tell this newbie here what 3Q’d is?

Is it appropriate to ask the MOC what position do you stand on his list.

Try searching your MOC's name on this site. Sometimes you will find specific things about their nomination process.
