USAFA plans new hotel, visitor center

Looks like the development will include an office complex and retail space as well. I wonder what the construction timeline is going to look like.

And the hotel is going to have SCIF conference rooms??? Interesting.

EDIT: Most of the project is scheduled for completion in 2024.

Office space after covid? Who would use it that wouldn't rather just rent a hotel conference room?

What they should do is set aside some room for Space Force to put up a facility to help them create some sort of identity. It's too early to do now, but so far Steve Carrell is the face of the branch and that's not great.

Took them a long time to get their muni bond financing lined up for this deal. The non-profit who is involved doesn't have the greatest track record - lots of defaults on their student housing projects. Will be interesting to see how this goes.

They will find some asbestos in the dirt and back this project up 5 years. I do love how it looks and it will be an impressive way to enter USAFA. I am with TLR2025, how can it take 8 years to rebuild the chapel, they built One World Trade Center in the same period of time. Throw some more man hours and get the chapel finished.

As a contractor, it is always faster and easier to do something right the first time than to come back later and try to fix a disaster.

The original architect for the USAFA chapel, Walter Netsch, would agree! Netsch's original design for the chapel included flashing (rain gutters) so rain would flow away from the structure-- but they were taken out of the plans because of government budget restrictions. As a result, the chapel has leaked since it was first opened in 1963 & the resulting significant water damage is the main reason for the current renovation. :(

I am recalling some funny line from Armageddon where someone references the parts being built by the lowest bidder.

Sometimes you get what you pay for.

And yes, I agree the Chapel should be a priority.

And how about some of that conference space to be available to those who recruit/support/interview candidates?

Well I hope they include the rain gutters this time around.

I just visited the academy yesterday as part of a tour with my club team, and the construction next to the North Gate seems to be coming in nicely, so 2024 still seems feasible. Though I still agree, it would be nice to have the chapel renovation prioritized more instead of office space.

They can't do much about the speed of chapel renovations. Asbestos made it more costly and complicated.
