Hello, I wanted to quickly gage the room to see what you guys think of my chances for the USAFA Prep.

High School:
HS Unweighted GPA: 3.4
Class rank: 84/247 - Top 35% of class
Taken AP American and European History and Honors Biology
I was apart of JROTC all four years of High school and held Flight Commander for 2 years.

I am an Eagle Scout and I currently volunteer as and Assistant Scoutmaster for a local Troop

College:
GPA: 3.9
I have obtained my CCAF

ACT Scores (I know these are not good and I am retaking the test again in Sept):
English: 20
Math:22
Reading: 22
Science: 23

I suck at standardized tests but I am trying my hardest to improve these scores by taking practice tests

Enlisted Leadership:
Tech School Yellow rope - Lead over 600 Airman
Committee member for the holiday party this year
Base Honor guard

Enlisted Awards:
BTZ
Coined at the Wing, Group and Squadron level for Excellence
Air Force Achievement Metal will be awarded by the end of October (Honor guard contract)

Please let me know what I need to work on but I already am aware that I need to improve my scores.

No one knows anyone’s chances for USAFA — too many variables at play — and certainly not for USAFA Prep either. One does not apply for the academy prep schools. You apply USAFA and then might be assigned to Prep because you’re deemed in need of more academic preparation, while having an otherwise strong application. So all you can do is apply to USAFA and then hope that, if you don’t receive an offer of appointment, you’re assigned to USAFA Prep instead of getting a TWE.

All that said, yes, your test scores seem to be the weak link. You have a ways to go, so seek every avenue for improvement. A 3.9 college GPA seems very good, but I say “seems” because you don’t mention the school or major or courses. A strong endorsement from your chain of command will help. Best wishes.

Are you enlisted? If you are enlisted from my understanding you can apply directly to the Prep School through the LEAD Program. This is the only way to apply directly to Prep if I understand it correctly from the kids my DS has talked with there he is currently at Prep Class of 2019. I definitely say you have a good chance for Prep if you are Enlisted

AF FORM 1786
AF Form 1786 is the Application for Appointment to the USAF Academy Under Quota Allotted to Enlisted Members of the Regular and Reserve Components of the Air Force. To compete for appointment to either the Academy or the Prep School, you must complete AF Form 1786, have your unit commander complete a statement on your character, ability and motivation to become an officer and complete and submit an online application (Pre-Candidate Questionnaire).

Good Luck!!!

I am currently Enlisted.

I had pretty similar test scores as you, and I also come from the enlisted side. Trust me, just be in good standing at your squadron and you'll make it. I was also BTZ and had an Associates before joining.

Hey Roman Empire,
Did you have any college done? And what were your final ACT scores after the September test?

Hey Roman Empire,
Did you have any college done? And what were your final ACT scores after the September test?

So everything here is pretty much what I submitted and what was looked at by the Prep School (I applied directly to the Prep School). I took a lot of college while being on Active Duty and got really good letters of Recommendations and Evaluations. The LEAD Program is really beneficial for people like me because I can prove myself by actually taking classes while being a Airman first. Just because I got lover than average ACT scores does not mean that anyone can do the same. Get the highest score you can if your are active duty and just make sure you get great letters of recommendations and you will be fine. Also taking college classes and getting your CCAF can also increase your chances of getting accepted.

Sincerely,
Tyler Roman

What was your SAT score RomanEmpire

My DS's roommate was enlisted and he is a C4C this year (freshman) I can see if I can ask him any specific questions if you want to PM me. :D

What was your SAT score RomanEmpire

Hello,

Sorry for the long wait but the prep school is no joke.

I had a composite of 21 on the ACT (never took the SAT) and made it to the Prep school. This does not mean that you will make it with my scores as there are a ton of other factors that go into the application. I made up this by taking a lot of college classes like College Algebra, Calculus, Meteorology, Spanish, and few English and Management classes. I also applied though LEAD program for Enlisted Airman so the process was a little different for me.

I can answer questions about the prep school as Quarter one is almost over!!!

Do you feel like you have to work overtime on school work to compete in the prep school, or do you find that the pacing is right for you?
