USAFA Prep Questions

I have a question. I recently received my appointment to the usafa prep school. My gpa was a 3.33 going in. I may receive a d in pre calc, however I’m trying to raise it up to a c. If I happen to get a d will my application be rescinded? With a d my gpa will be a 3.2 this semester. I am an athlete if that helps.

They will get a laptop at the prep school, they buy it along with uniforms and books and class fees etc... DS took his own after Christmas break for personal use. you can not connect personal commuters to the prep network. The cost of these can be paid up front or taken out of preppies pay through out the year.

I believe DS has a private modem that can accommodate 4 prepies which is provided by local carrier I think his cost is $5 a month since they split it. but it is slow and often he just uses cell phone data. if you have a good unlimited Data plan on phones that may be the better way to go, but you need to decide if it worth the cost for the speed.

Since they get a laptop at the Prep school- do they take that to USAFA? Or do they get issued a different one there?

just found out they will get issued another Laptop when they get to USAFA. the prep school laptops are just loaners they get turned back at the end of the year. DS also took his personal laptop since you can not access personal emails from prep laptops.

I'm going to say in my unprofessional opinion, they will probably not rescind your prep appointment for D, but could chose to do so. I am guessing they gave you a prep appointment because they felt that you needed more work on math which you will get at prep school to prepare you for the USAFA.

I would suggest rather than worrying about whether you will lose your appoint for a D, Focus on things you can control and see if you can use that energy to get a B. Math will be very important to you at the USAFA so try to get as much as you can out of the class you are currently in.

The USAFA sees something in you they like that is why they are giving you the opportunity at the Prep school to prove yourself.

Are you a recruited athlete with a LOA?
IF so I would suggest communicating your concerns with the USAFA coach, so they can be out in front of any issues and better help you.

I am a recruited athlete, however I received a nomination. I didn’t get a LOA. Does this change anything?

if you are recruited athlete then the coach has vested interest in you getting into prep school so they will help where they can. If you end up with a "D" I would let coach know so they can remind admissions that they want you, if it is even an issue. Don't know how much difference it will make, but cant hurt.
Still better to focus now on getting a good grade in class now since that will help you with prep school classes.

again I am not in the know just dad that had some experience with DS getting into prep school.

About how many prep school appointments are awarded each year? DS received TWE last week which stated only that he was not receiving an appointment to USAFA. Other candidates’ TWE read no appointment, no prep school, no falcon scholarship. We “hope” this means he is in the running for something if an opening is to come available. Stats are good on app except for not so great test scores, 1220 SAT and 27 ACT. Like me, he has a good GPA (3.9/4.1) but isn’t a great test-taker. Tons of leadership, volunteering, 2 part-time jobs, 2 varsity sports. Personally I think it would serve him well to attend prep for a year. I would love to wake up to him saying he got into the prep school, but we have turned our focus to Plan B as it is now Plan A until otherwise notified.

I asked my admissions POC the same thing. She told me that if the TWE didn’t mention anything about Prep or Foundation programs, that means we are still being considered. However, if we are not selected to neither, we won’t be receiving any notification that we didn’t get in.

There are about 240 cadets accepted into the prep school each year.

Thank you so much. This helped a lot.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but I have a couple of questions about taking the Oath/ swearing in: Do the Preps have a swearing in sometime in the first few days after the report? If so, and they go on to the Academy the following year, what do they do while the direct entry people take the Oath?
