We are not sure if our DS should have a car while at prep school. We also know he won’t have it the following year when he makes it to the academy that first year. Any pros or cons from anyone that attended the P school about having or not having a car?

What prep school is he attending?

I know GMC allows cars. Everything a cadet needs (there's a CVS) and several restaurants are within walking distance, but it would be nice to have a car.

I believe the OP is referencing USAFA Prep School on campus. Based on the google search, the checklist suggests you can have them. Realize that you will need to figure out what to do with it for two years because you must be a Junior at USAFA before you can technically have a car overnight on campus. One could potentially leverage a sponsor family or offsite storage to keep the vehicle. As for whether or not it is advised... I cannot speak to the freedoms of Preppies but I do understand the 12 month period to have a range starting with significant restriction and then transitions into freedoms.

In my opinion, if you have it, and can afford the insurance, it is something that would be nice to have. There are no "upperclassman" to borrow from, and the only things in walking distance would be the grocery store (commissary), the walmart-esq Base Exchange (BX), and the base movie theater. Everything else would be miles away and without a car is limiting, but there are creative options to get places. Having your own car puts the cadet candidate in control of their situation, and would be the popular kid on campus who could easy make gas money taking others off campus.

Our DS had his truck and loved every minute of it! He was able to go to church and do things on weekends once they earned those privileges. He didn't take it until after Christmas break though. He did a road trip with friends to take it to the P and then road trip home with my husband after graduation.

Thank you for the info. He is attending the P school at the academy. I just don't want him having a car to be a distraction. But then wonder about not having a car for three years.

Speaking as a 2021 preppie, it is so worth having a car if he is able. I would HIGHLY recommend bringing the car, because there is so much to do and see in the area. At the Prep School and the Academy, anything can become a distraction if you let it. Part of the program is learning to manage time and priorities, and it is something that Cadet Candidates learn very quickly. Don't let that be the reason he doesn't get to bring a car.
