I'm a senior in high school and currently in the process of applying to USAFA, and was wondering about the admissions situation for the prep school and falcon foundation scholarships. I know that there is no separate application and all denied applicants are considered, but what kind of profile would get invited to these programs? My GPA is not amazing, my ACT score is pretty good, and SAT is still pending, and I have a very good resume, with volunteer service, music, Civil Air Patrol Mitchell award, etc. At this point, I think that going to a prep school, the USAFA PS or another funded by the falcon foundation, would be very beneficial to me entering the academy as a 4-degree.

So really, what can I expect if denied from the "normal" application in regards to prep schools, and potentially re-applying after a year at a civilian college?

I know there is a way to get in to the prep school through Civil Air Patrol if you have a mitchell award, which you do. Ask about it next meeting, there should also be something for it on the CAP website.

admission for preppies

If you go to the prep school do you still have to apply for a nomination? do you still take the ACT during prep school?

Yes, you must reapply for a nomination. No, you do not have to take the ACT again. :thumb:

I do not know if USAFA prep school is required to retake the ACT, but DS recieved a Falcon scholarship and as part of his program he was required to retake both SAT and ACT. Maybe that requirement is dependant on the prep school chosen but it doesn't hurt to keep trying to improve yourself.

what happens if as a preppie you don't get a nomination? but successfully pass the prep school program?

The way I understand it if they fail to receive a nomination they can gain entry through the Superintendent if they have successfully completed the prep school program.

I'm sure LFry94 who's been there done that could give the exact path and wording.

Falcon Scholarship

Does completion of a year of prep school under the Falcon scholarship and nomination guarantee appointment to USAFA?

For a Falcon, the appointment is theirs to lose. Yes, they must apply for a nomination. But if they stay out of trouble (no DUIs or arrests), stay injury free and get good grades, they will receive an appointment the following year. This is why a Falcon scholarship is referred to as "The Golden Ticket" by some.

My apologies. I haven't checked the forums in a few days.

A regular prep school cadet candidate who has completed the prep school program has the opportunity to receive a nomination from the superintendent if they do not get a presidential/congressional nomination.

An appointment from the superintendent is not guaranteed, but in most cases, if the student showed to be successful academically, militarily, and athletically, the student usually receives a nomination.

This information is based off of what I saw from my prep school graduation class in 2013.

IF DS were fortunate to get offered a slot at the prep school, when would he find out? Would that be an email to check his portal?

thanks in advance

Last year DS recieved an email that his portal had been updated. On the portal there was a letter with the Falcon Scholarship offer. He was able to accept the offer on his portal. Hope that helps.
