USAFA Prep School Offers

Steve,

thx for the helpful info on the AFA PS. Any idea how many per yr are accepted total?

Also, I notice you are an ALO. My son contacted his ALO in Feb and asked about meeting. He was told "it's a little too early to meet". We had tons of questions and I have resorted to getting them answered on here instead of the ALO since we didn't meet with him in spring. DS is on flight home from SS now and I know he wants to meet with his ALO asap. They did have some email exchange re: getting into SS but no mtg set up.

Any advice? do you recommend parents attend first meeting with ALO with their son/daughter? We still have several questions about the whole process, particularly securing a nomination; so should we attend with him or just send out questions on paper with him?!

Thanks.

Hi!

Well...all ALO's are different. Their schedules are varied and who knows what is/was on that particular ALO's mind at that moment.

"Officially" NO student has an "ALO" until they're officially a candidate for admission and that doesn't happen until the AFA designates you one: either you have a nomination or your record is such that the AFA has "artificially named you."

And some ALO's because they deal with so many folks...they'll be sorta standoffish. I don't prefer that method. But I can't "spank" an ALO that does that.

That being said, I think an ALO should be available for ANY questions. It might take them a day or so, based upon their squadron, but...for example, I'm on a trip and just saw this today.

SO....I would have him e-mail the ALO and write a simple "I just got back from SS...it was YYYYYY....." and then add a question: "So sir/ma'm, what should I/we do next?"

If that doesn't open a dialogue...let me know.

Thanks for your reply.

My DS did just what you suggested and emailed his ALO today to let him know he got back from SS. :thumb:

When DS first called him back in Jan or Feb, DS hadn't been accepted to SS yet. Once he got accepted, ALO sent him an email saying congrats, so obviously he was keeping an eye on him. I'm sure he's a great ALO, prob just busy and deals with lots of potential cadets so didn't want to get the cart before the horse.

At this point DS is a "competitive pre-candidate". Just scheduled all his DoDMERB appts today and trying to get things rolling on his MOCs apps. That's where we could really use some advice/help so hopefully his ALO will be available in the next couple of weeks. DS asked in his email if it would be appropriate to meet at this point.

Thanks again:biggrin:

Hi!

Just made the "connection" with the other e-mails/comments! :thumb:

DS is doing the right thing! Have him keep at it...my "guess" is the ALO will want to speak with him "officially" sometime around August...I'm thinking that's when the AF From 4060's will come down to the ALO force. That's when we have to start looking at our candidates.

I received my appointment to the prep school in January. This year, USAFA decided to host a "LEAD Diversity" visitation program. It was mostly enlisted folks; however, there were some high schoolers. While we were there, anyone who had all their paperwork in order and was qualified got an early appointment. It was a great experience. Anyway, hello to all my future classmates!
