Why aren't USAFA Cadets issued a rifle anymore? I was watching some old/new videos about the academy to gain more insight into daily life there but I realized cadets don't use them in marching anymore.
 
I don't know the current situation, but we (2010) had drill rifles as 4 digs, but only did drill and ceremony stuff with them on rare occasions. Most parades are just marching, and only the leadership has sabers.
 
They do have training rifles, usually locked in their room right by the door for easy access.
 
They aren’t rubber. They’ve been demilitarized and plugged, but they’re real.

I feel like this was another fact about the Air Force I didn’t need to know. Very jealous. You haven’t truly drilled until everyone goes to left shoulder arms to continue marching about because their right arms are dead from carrying that rifle for so long in mindless circles...
 
If the USAFA has M14 drill rifles (like USNA) they should weigh 133.3 oz. (8.33 pounds, without ammunition, sling, or magazine).

The USAF used the M14 SMUD (Stand-off MUnition Disruption) rifle in the field as recently as 2009. They were used by EOD personnel to destroy unexploded ordinance. They may still use them. I don't have a clue.

My M-1 Garand weighs 9-1/2 pounds, but if feels more like 11 pounds, @raimius :)
