Hi everyone,
I'm a current junior that's going to apply to USAFA's Summer Seminar when applications open. I know teacher recommendations are required, so I'm wondering if a teacher of a certain subject is value higher than others (for example, will a recommendation from a chemistry teacher be valued more than an English teacher?). Is there a certain form of outline the teachers have to follow or is it free write? Finally, I attend Junior College (half High School half college classes), would it be better for me to get recommendations from both High School and college professors or only High School?

Any other advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Zoe

I personally saved my best recommendations for the actual application. They won’t transfer over to my knowledge. College professor recommendations are certainly a plus

Three sons applied to USAFA’s summer seminar program. Don’t recall either son needing LOR’s to apply to SS. I know you can elect to have your SS app act as your pre-candidate application for appointment. One thing to keep in mind is that if you do, you will be on the early side (November 1st this cycle) of needing to COMPLETE your regular application to USAFA should you become a candidate.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you are not selected for SS, it’s not an indication that “they don’t want you”. DS #1 fell into that belief. It’s not correct at all.

For sure I could be remembering incorrectly but I don’t recall that LOR’s are required for a seminar application.

^^ I attended Summer Seminar this past June at USAFA and did not need any LOR’s in order to apply.

It’s certainly possible the application has changed, but I doubt it.

I think OP is confusing the SS app and the USAFA regular candidate app.

Okay thank you all for the clarification, I thought that you didn’t need and LOR but I just wanted to make sure!! Thank you again!!

- is there any short essay needed for SS?
- is the application supposed to finished in 1 sitting? I mean when you start it, it should be finished in 1 session.

I read that for USNA, it has to be finished in 1 session and the portal has all requirements clearly spelled out what you need before starting the application.

Regards

Summer Seminar does require a short-ish essay explaining your motivation for applying and perhaps what you aim to get from the experience (I’m paraphrasing as I don’t intricately remember).

The application is easy to complete in one sitting. In fact, one of my fellow campers joked about doing it in 30 minutes before the due date. Don’t sweat it too much, basically.

I second this. Being or not being selected has no bearing on your eventual candidacy for appointment. My DS was not selected for Summer Seminar at USAFA, USMA, or USCGA (only got in USNA) . He is now a Doolie at USAFA c/o 2023.

Hi,
I'm doing my application at the moment for Summer Seminar at the Air Force Academy and the last question is confusing me. When filling out the application they have the list of questions first and then they relist the questions after that but in a text box. The last question of the list of questions at the beginning is different from the question in the text box. Which question do I answer?

My DD is filling the app too at this moment. I have advised her to answer the question in the text box. My understanding is that when the admissions looks at the application, they will see the answer based in the question asked in the text box.

Hey we never know if this was intentional to catch candidates off guard [emoji6]

Hello all! I'm a junior currently filling out my application, but I was wondering that if I submit the application, will I be able to definitely go back and edit it? I haven't written any of my statement, and I want to go back in the future (until Jan. 15th, of course) and update grades, responses, GPA, etc. On the USAFA website about SS it says I can, but the language on the portal makes it seem like I won't be able to.

If you submit it, you cannot come back and edit. But you can always save and continue, logout and make changes. My DD has done it few times just to confirm that she will be able to. At the end of the application, there is a checkbox and the candidate has to check it before the application is submitted.

Ah, I see, thank you! Have we figured out which essay prompt is correct yet? Or should I just incorporate both, which I probably would've done anyways. :)

I have advised my DD to answer the question in text box. She will also send an email to USAFA asking for clarification.
