USAFA Summer Seminar

My DD sent an email to USAFA seeking clarification on the discrepancy between questions. Not sure how long before the reply comes.
Question to the ALO @flieger83; What would you recommend at this point for SS candidates?

Update: Just got email back from USAFA that candidates are to write on the question in the text box. The question is 'Describe an experience in your life when you served......"

Hope this clears the air for all.
Good luck !

Hi, another quick question about SS,
How much do they weigh your SAT/ACT score? My score is right now is below average (even though my GPA is above average). Will my low score impact by application and be a disqualifying factor?

Thanks!

They definitely consider it...it's all part of them assessing whether or not you would be an attractive candidate for them in the future. In my opinion, gender and geography are considered very strongly as well. I believe my son got accepted to USAFA SS because of where we reside (more in a "feeder" geography for USNA and USMA). He got rejected by USNA and USMA for summer seminars, they knew he'd apply without the seminar experience. Truthfully, it appears to be largely random, but certain characteristics (like good SAT's) sure don't hurt.

I was reading on the USAFA website and it says this, “Students are selected to participate in Summer Seminar on a “whole person concept.” We are looking for emerging leaders to take our Air Force into the future, and we look for that leadership based on demonstrated leadership experience or potential in extracurricular and community activities, athletics and academics.”
I interpreted this as that they will look at everything in your application so if you have low ACT/SAT scores then maybe something else on your application can compensate for that! Don’t lose hope and there are also other summer programs for the other academies as well!

If you submit it, you cannot come back and edit. But you can always save and continue, logout and make changes. My DD has done it few times just to confirm that she will be able to. At the end of the application, there is a checkbox and the candidate has to check it before the application is submitted.
Hi, I just applied to the Summer Seminar as well. If you go back to the application afterward (log in and the application option is there to click, you can make changes. For example, although I've already taken the SATs multiple times, I did take the PSATs in October again as a junior to see if I could potentially earn a merit scholarship or recognition. Those scores are not available until 12/11 but I would go in and update my scores if I did better than when I took them in my sophomore year. It does appear on the right there is is an edit button on the right of demographics and each application section, to go in and make changes. Also, I heard that they do not process even the earliest applications until February or March? So I guess if you have changes in grades for your junior year, new test scores, activities, accolades, those can be added before that time?

My DD has not submitted the application yet. But we can go back and edit/modify anything we want.

Hi,
I'm doing my application at the moment for Summer Seminar at the Air Force Academy and the last question is confusing me. When filling out the application they have the list of questions first and then they relist the questions after that but in a text box. The last question of the list of questions at the beginning is different from the question in the text box. Which question do I answer?
I don't have the "3 reasons" question on my portal. Am I supposed to?

Update: my DD submitted her SS application and once done, she got a link to go to application status page. Once she clicked that, she could see all the sections she filled up and a update button next to each section.

My guess is that a candidate can update the application even after submission.

Regards

Does anyone know the Summer Seminar dates for 2020. Currently the 2019 dates are still posted on the USAFA SS site.

I second this. Being or not being selected has no bearing on your eventual candidacy for appointment. My DS was not selected for Summer Seminar at USAFA, USMA, or USCGA (only got in USNA) . He is now a Doolie at USAFA c/o 2023.
Hello! Do you know the Psat score that your DS had when he applied to USAFa's SS? Additionally, did you use the SS application for the Pre-Candidate application? Thanks!

I think for my summer seminar application I only had my PSAT score of 1190 and I still got accepted.

We used his first SAT score (1330) when he applied. We resubmitted a second score (1410) before final decisions we made.

We did use the SS app for his pre-candidate app.

Hi everyone,
I'm a current junior that's going to apply to USAFA's Summer Seminar when applications open. I know teacher recommendations are required, so I'm wondering if a teacher of a certain subject is value higher than others (for example, will a recommendation from a chemistry teacher be valued more than an English teacher?). Is there a certain form of outline the teachers have to follow or is it free write? Finally, I attend Junior College (half High School half college classes), would it be better for me to get recommendations from both High School and college professors or only High School?

Any other advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Zoe
I attended the SS this summer and when I was completing the application I do not recall having to get any LOR from teachers. I believe those are only required for when your candidate packet opens for you (which should be around July of next year for you). I believe all that was required was evaluations from teachers.

Yup, I realized that when I logged into my portal haha! Do you remember if you needed a rec from your school counselor or just teachers (for the actual app)?

For the actual application, you need an evaluation from an ENGLISH teacher, MATH teacher (both must be from either Junior or Senior year) and on from "OTHER" which could be a counselor, coach, another teacher, priest etc. anyone who knows you well and can complete the evaluation
