Many athletes are recruited and sign with the academies. They don't need a MOC or Senator (directly). For instance, there are 7 athletes from your home state of Georgia who have committed to Westpoint this fall to play football. In addition to those 5, several more HS students will be appointed through the non-athletic channels, with direct MOC or Senator appointments.... you will see through this example the athletes didn't "take" the nominations from other non-athletes. The athletes are on a different level of acceptance and are under different approval processes. The athletes who are appointed via Senator or MOC channels do not "take" from the traditional appointments. You'll find the same consistencies with the AF and Naval academies with regard to recruited athletes.
 
Question of typical timing of receiving appointment from submission of application. My son’s application was considered submitted in late December. With the rolling process of appointments, I am wondering if his is still simply in line. Have candidates with submission completion dates after December received appointments? Patiently waiting/hoping for the yellow circle to appear…

Yes, there could be candidates that applied later and have received appointments. USAFA doesn't have rolling admissions like a regular college. They have to receive and resolve each congressman's slate and appoint based on that. Usually, appointments based on presidential nominations show up first and congressional nominations later. Last year, my son was finished with his application in October but his congressman didn't submit nominations until January 31st. He couldn't even be considered for an appointment before the nominations were submitted. There are many other factors involved but that is just one example of why a later application could be considered for appointment first.

Thank you! My situation is probably a little different to most this year since it was my second time applying. I completed DoDMERB in Fall of 2021 and was Medically Disqualified (I did receive a wavier for AFROTC). Then after reapplying to USAFA, I received a wavier for USAFA in January 2023 (I didn't have to re-do DoDMERB) and a month later got my appointment.
 
My DS sent in a final document, an academic award he recently received, and Team Silver replied "Received and added. Your application is now COMPLETE and ready for Class of 2027 Selections Committee. Good luck!"

How long does a file typically sit in committee? How does the committee select candidates for Prep School or FFS as opposed to regular appointments? Are those determinations made at one time, or does his file go to a different stack for consideration for the other two options if he's not selected for appointment to AFA? If he's not selected outright, would his file be waiting to see how many declines they get for him to get a second look?
 
Still trying to figure how things work. My son received a congressional nomination. His friend from CAP received the same congressman’s nom. His friend received his appointment 2 weeks ago but we haven’t heard anything. Do they typically release all of the same congressman’s appointments at once?

Each Member of Congress can nominate 10 people for 1 spot. If your son and his friend were both nominated by the same source and his friend got THE appointment than your son is out of the running for that particular appointment. He is still in the running though for other open appointments not attributed to congress but will be competing against the National Waiting List.

Edited to Add: Assuming the MOC is only filling one spot of their available 5 - which IS typical.

Each MOC and Senator have 5 designated spots at each academy. If there are two open slots for this coming year (example: a previous appointee left the academy their junior year leaving a "extra" spot), then a MOC or Sen. can appoint two applicants for the respective academy (attached to them to complete the "5") However, it is up to the academy as to how many they attach to the MOC or Sen. if there are available slots. It's not as cut and dry as just "one" nomination for each year...

The only thing I would add is that the MOC could have more than one open slot at the SA. If that is the case you can still receive an appointment through your MOC.

Read the pinned post at the top of the Nominations forum.

On a slate of nominees of up to 10 names for one of the 5 allowed slots for the elected official, the SA will charge one of the appointments to the MOC, and offer an appointment to one of the fully qualified applicants.

The SAs may offer other fully qualified nominees on that slate an appointment, which they charge to other nominating authorities they control.

And, fully qualified nominees on that slate may be offered appointments and charged to other noms they received such as Presidential, JROTC/ROTC or other service-connected noms.

As noted above, those 5 appointee slots are spread over 4 years, so some years 2 slates of 10 names each are submitted, or I suppose 2 names could be chosen from 1 slate, if the nominee pool was small. When midshipmen and cadets leave before 4 years, that opens up the need for potential adjustment in later cycles.

Standard advice here is resist the urge to look right or left at other candidates, especially if they know a “stat” for the other person is lower than theirs.

Everyone’s application is evaluated from a whole person standpoint, with many factors looked at. Each person is evaluated as an independent puzzle piece for potential fit into the class, that cycle.
 
I have just gotten off the phone with a member of admissions and I can answer a few questions that I see popping up on the forum.

The admissions board is still reviewing applications, mine was just reviewed 2 days ago, 3/21, which means I was not even acknowledged as a candidate yet, meaning I was never part of the first wave of appointments. There may even be another wave soon! Some people may not find out until the end of April if they receive an appointment.

For those wondering if they should continue to send additional documents and supplements to admissions- Once your application is reviewed by the board (you really have no way of knowing unless you call), anything submitted after the review will not be looked at. Chances are, your application has already been seen by the board.

The lady from admissions seemed pretty irritated with the large influx of additional documents being sent in! I don't think it would necessarily hurt if you sent additional documents, but if it is not part of the Candidate Handbook, it may look negatively on your part to not follow the directions!

My DS called them yesterday and they said everyone should know by 4/21.

Thank you! I am wondering if they are reviewing each slate before making individual appointments for that congressman does this require them to wait for every nominated candidate of that congressman to have their application completed (ie medically cleaned)? May be grasping at straws. :) I can see how certain types of nominations go to the top of the pile as well.

Anyone from Alabama gotten an appointment yet? If so, what district and what noms did you receive?
