USCGA 2021 Appointments

Did it show that the application was done going through CCERB? That's the last checkbox of the list of things to do. We were informed it was at the Board but from what we see it hasn't been completed yet. Hoping to hear soon. Stressful journey for a parent. Also still awaiting news from the USNA and USAFA.
Extremely stressful for us parents. I lost a lot of sleep over this process. DD did the hard work and we did the stressing!
The day before DD received the call, there was no check mark. We were waiting for it. So it must have happened all at one. Check mark then call. Interesting.

Ain't that the truth. It's been a long road. But, these kids have been busting it for a long time. It's a great thing see. At least I got a little sleep back knowing Plan B is taken care off.

Oh wow, was it from an admissions officer than?
Sorry if I'm being nosey
Not nosey at all! Yes. It was admissions that called. Took us by surprise. We thought DD would be selected for prep since her test scores were not great. 1200 on the SAT. Obviously there was something that stood out in her application. I would love to know what it was exactly.

Being waitlisted in EA is stressful!!!!! Total limbo. Don't know what to think.

Well a spot may open up for someone on the wait list as DD will most likely go with her West Point offer. Army was her first choice but would have happily accepted Coast Guard if West Point didn't work out. It was not an issue decision but I think its been made.

Well, one DS is serving on a Cutter in the Fleet and just got a call with an offer of appointment to CGA. He was RA. Our other DS is currently in CGAS program. If all goes well both should start at CGA this summer. Not out of the woods yet...but we are 50% there on appointments. Praying...

Great news for your DD. My DD ACT. 32 and SAT 1450. Applied RA.

Wow, two at CGA at the same time. You don't here that often! I'm hoping one of my younger kids will want to pursue this route but I'm not sure if I can go through this process again!

Those are some very high scores. Good for her! I thought my DD's chances were blown when she didn't raise her scores. Of course, she just took the SAT again last Saturday and feels she scored high this time around.

Of course, DD needs to make her decision based on what she feels is the best fit. I'm sure she knows all the stats regarding opportunities for women in the Coast Guard.

As parents, her dad and I would like to see her in the Coast Guard. For herself, her plan has always been to do international relations and intelligence work. Those jobs are available n the Coast Guard but given both option, she feels there would be more positions available through the army. Please correct her if she is off base. She has not made a decision yet so any ammo we have to present to her will be helpful.

Look past time in uniform, if she doesn't stay AD more than 5-7 years - the "ABC" agencies love junior officers, regardless of commissioning source, major or officer professional community. Of course, an SA background adds extra shine. We have, at this point, 7 USNA alumni sponsor daughters and sons serving with Federal agencies or State Dept Foreign Service. They were Marine ground, Navy surface ship, Navy EOD, among others, with majors ranging from Poli Sci to Physics. Not one of them were intelligence specialists on AD. They are now all doing some variation of "international relations" and "intelligence" work, some in very unsung hero/heroine ways. Those agencies know they are getting smart, disciplined, pre-cleared, go-in-harm's-way, physically fit, motivated agents who have the leadership background to take on successively tougher roles. Some have also gone the analyst route; we have a former Q-Econ major, naval aviator, who is now doing interesting work relating to bad guy money flows.

She cannot go wrong with either choice, especially if she is thinking long-term career post-AD. The question to ask, if she does not get Intel or her first choice at either SA, are there second choice options with which she would be fine. Or, is there one of the SAs that has options she absolutely does not want to chance being assigned to.

The other reality is, once she chooses, having exposure to all the branch/warfare specialty options available, interacting with officers in those fields, getting exposure to field activities during summer training - she could go a completely different direction. That said, CG and Army are two different worlds, with one essentially revolving around the water, and the other, land.

It was easy for me, years ago - I grew up on a coastal island, the smell of salt on the wind and the sight of large bodies of water never far away, with on/in-water activities part of daily life. I knew where I did not want to be (out of sight of water), but have the greatest respect for the non-sea services.

There is no way to game it all out. A large part of decision-making as an officer is doing the comparative analysis of both tangible and intangible elements, making the best decision possible given the info to hand, and committing to it.

Capt MJ posts some fine advice. The water vs. land service is a good point. Also the second choice consideration.

Wonderful information. This will past along today. Thanks so much.

Regarding IR, DS tells me "perhaps the army may be more glamorous", but the CG has attaches "all over the world".

Army more glamorous? There are, what, 350,000 active duty soldiers (I probably should google that)? It's a dime a dozen.

Go be a diamond on really old boats!

... to a young adult having to make a choice between both SA's.
I had to ensure DD is picking the right SA based on career choice and not the prestige of any particular SA. Ground or water. Personally I feel she won't get lost in the crowd at the CGA but I guess she'll have to decide for herself despite her ripe young age of 17!
