No Big White, BUT....

My D was officially notified on Monday that she and 9 of her Marion classmates received their full appointments to the class of 2013!!! Woo Hoo!!! Wouldn't mind seeing Big White appear in the mail, but THIS is GOOD!:thumb::thumb::thumb:

Only 9???

I was under the impression that roughly 25 prep scholars were at Marion this year, so a bit surprised less than half received appointments. The prep scholars at NMMI are still waiting to hear... But their spirits are VERY HIGH!

10 CGA Scholars from MMI

My D said there were 10 that got appointments and 6 that did not (she + 9 more). I'm not positive, but I thought there were 16 in the Scholars in the MMI program. If you look on their site, there is a picture of all the cadets in the SAP program for Coast Guards. It looks like there are about 25 cadets in the picture (there are more, but I recognize some of them as advisors, CGA people, etc). When my D said they were notified, she said it came from thier MMI Academic Advisor - LCDR Meisenheimer. My guess is that he was just notifying the CGA Scholars, not the unsponsored cadets who may already have heard via the normal channels. I've tried to get more specifics from her (who and why not for those that didn't get it) but - go figure- she doesn't answer my e-mails:thumbdown: Also, maybe she doesn't know. I suspect it is hard to be excited about getting your appointment and also mindful of the disappointment of those who didn't -- they all worked so hard for it this past year!

Bear - you NMMI cadets need to get after your advisor - they MUST know who all are getting appointments and I'm sure the wait is getting unbearable for all of you! I'm praying that you all get it & SOON!!!

So will those who do not gain appoinments go active duty as I thought this was part of the scholars requirement if unable to advance tto the Academy?Just wondering.

I don't think so. If they separated on their volition, I think they still owed the Coast Guard some obligation, but if they are not accepted into the program after their year in Prep School, I think they can choose their next step. After all, my D was told to apply to her second choice (she was reapplying to a college that accepted her last year), just in case...

Oh, & she just called me and reaffirmed that there are only 16 sponsored CGA prep students there at MMI. She says the non-sponsored are still waiting to hear too. The 6 that didn't get appointments yet are not absolutely denied - they are still reviewing their files. Sooo - some of them may still get their appointments!!!!!

civilian life

I am under the impression each prep’s case is individually reviewed and the outcome can differ. Several of the preps at NMMI departed from the school mid-term, and they have returned to civilian life. With that said, most of the preps are doing very well at NMMI and they are expecting appointments. Those preps who receive appointments will arrive at the USCA totally (110%) prepared to be swabs. And the established friendships they have made at NMMI are lifetime bonds that will get them through rough days at the Academy. One other point - it’s not a walk in the park at NMMI. For the incoming preps - Be prepared to study until eye balls bulge… plan to become highly organized – just like your mother always wanted you to be, and finally plan to exercise until to barf!

I promise its worth the outcome!
