USCGA Class of 2014 Appointments

Does anyone here know how much input or weight a coach has on the appointment process?

My son/daughter is still in the candidate pool and grades and scores are good. If the coach forwards a player recommendation form/letter to admissions, how much weight does this carry as long as your grades and scores are competitive?

Thanks

Someone can correct me if I mistate something. From earlier posts regarding this coach's letter, I believe that it is seen as another recommendation. It holds more weight for applicants for evaluating whether or not to offer prep school. Again, I seem to remember seeing this answer on a very old post, but someone more knowledgeable can help with this.
My son was a recruited athlete and I know that there is still huge emphasis on being the "whole person" ( grades, ECs, leadership, etc..) Regardless of the sport, the applicant will ultimately still have to have the entire package.

I have the same question regarding being a recruited athlete. I absolutely understand that sports is a small part of the total applicant package. Yet, I was wondering if recruits would possibly find out earlier if they are accepted. I am asking this because other schools seem to want an answer as to whether my child is coming or not so that they can complete their recruiting season. I just don''t know if these schools will wait until April to hear if my child is going to attend or not. Of course, we are not required to respond to May 1, but when you are recruited to play a sport, the coaches seem to want to know asap. Just a thought . . . How should we handle this . . .

Thanks so much.

Athletic Recruitment

These are really good questions. I understand the pressures as my son was offered athletic scholarships to play at other universities while waiting on an appointment. The coaches really want to finalize their roster and need to know if they are better off using the offered money somewhere else. It gets more complicated when Title IX issues evolve due to requirements for matching funds between men's and women's programs. In this case, both programs are in limbo. The bottom line is that the offer letter should only have two conditions: acceptance to the school, and perhaps a deadline for notification. The notification date is usually the same as the National Signing Day (I think it was 3 Feb this year), but if not clearly stated in the offer letter then the offer should be good whether you accept today or in April. Hope this helps.

after a couple months of trying to appeal a waiver denial for celiac disease, i was told definitively that there wasn't a chance to obtain a waiver. im obviously upset, and dont really understand why i cant get a waiver. after looking at the CGA food menu, i can eat a majority of what is offered as well as a majority of the MRE's. i realize that hope is probably lost, but if anyone has some last ditch ideas i will gladly accept them, thanks

bharbert,

I have no doubt you have been in direct contact with DODMERB's Mr. Larry Mullen who posts on this site - I also encourage you, if you have yet to - continue with your "Plan B" - being in contact with alternative colleges/universities.

If you have been doing so - I am glad. If not...I encourage you to check out our nation's senior military colleges/universities as well as our nation's state maritime academies. I believe we all would offer a quality education for you.

I wish you well,

Fuji

Waiver Denial Reversal

Does anyone know how to get a waiver denial reversed?

My current disqualifying condition is "distant visual acuity not correctable to 20/20 in either eye." (Although I am pretty sure that it IS correctable to 20/20...but that's another issue)

I've been in contact with the Academy's secretary for the Chief Medical Officer, and she told me to have my private optometrist fax the information to her. I recently received a letter from DoDMERB (who I didn't send that information too) that my data was insufficient and that I needed to go to a Military Treatment Facility...none of which are located in my state. (which is why I would just prefer to get a waiver because going out of state will be hard for me)

So is there anything else that I could do to get the waiver denial :confused:reversal? For instance, could I perhaps retake the PFE?

I already have a conditional appointment...this is the only thing that needs to be cleared up

Thank you so much:thumb:

Waiver

Time is short here, pretty soon it will be too late to get an appointment.....so here is what I would suggest....

If the DoDMERB official stated that you need to go to a "Military Treatment Facility", then you need to do exactly as they say. I realize it may be inconvenient for you and that you would prefer a waiver, but what you prefer is not what the service needs.....part of the Academy process is to mold yourself to their needs, not expect them to come around to yours!

Make sure this is all coordinated between the Academy and DoDMERB....I would send copies of everything to both (although I would defer to Mr. Mullen on this one). As far as the PFE goes, I don't know how that is relevant.........you need to address the eyesight concern, the way they want it addressed, and quickly!

SamAca10, I'm sorry to hear of your waiver denial. If you haven't already done so, your best bet is to email Mr Larry Mullen - see his info on the DoDMERB section of this forum:

He is an amazing man who will personally guide you on what you should do.
Send him your name and the last 4 digits of your SSN# larry.mullen@dodmerb.tma.osd.mil

My son was initially dq'd for vision for USNA (we were expecting this). We then sent in his personal eye doctor records (the results were far better than his initial DoDMERB vision test which was just an auto refractor test and not great for those who are borderline cases) and then we were also sent to a Military Treatment Facility to be retested by a military eye doctor. We travelled 3 hours to the nearest MTF that could administer the required tests and after a long tiring day it proved to be well worth it, because my son received a vision waiver and now has an appointment to USNA class of 2014!

Waiver decisions are made by the academy to which you are applying (and not DoDMERB), but Mr. Mullen is really the only one who can guide you on what else you can do re. medical testing. With something like vision, there is always a chance that results of a new test can make all the difference to your case. Do not give up until Mr. Mullen says there is nothing else you can do!

Just found out one of the young ladies I interviewed(last year) got an appointment! She reapplied this year and got the big envelope. Congrats to her!:thumb:

We can officially turn my son's "Conditional Appointment" status to "FULL APPOINTMENT"! His medical waiver was granted the other day by the USCGA. He will pick up his Full Appointment Package tomorrow morning when he reports to the CGA for the Academy Experience. Needless to say, the stress level in our house has gone WAY DOWN!!! Thanks to all the well wishers out there! This has been one heck of a roller coaster ride!

CONGRATS to your son!

Is he staying for the game on Friday evening?

Absolutely!!! The timing couldn't have been more perfect!! He had the opportunity to meet Coach Krautler a few weeks ago when the Bears were playing at the USNA. He is really looking forward to seeing the team play again, under the lights, on their home field! From what we understand, it should be a great game!

Congratulations to your son! We'll see you on RDay! :thumb:

Completed applications reviewed by CCEB for Class of 2014 = ~2,200

Projected appointments for Class of 2014 = 290.

Almost there....

As you all know, I hold a conditional appointment to CGA. I was denied a medical waiver, but I am fortunate enough to be in the situation where my disqualification isn't even valid...in two weeks I will be taking a rebuttal for DoDMERB, which will mean I will have a FULL appointment if my test goes well!

Does anyone know how long it would be until I would get the full appointment and other materials, assuming I pass the medical test?

There is no one on these Forums that will know the answer to that...because there is no one on these Forums who know how long it will take for the medical waiver authority to reconsider your new submission. I don't even know that...and I'm as close to the system as U can get. And before we even approach that, this is what has to happen.....

Order of events....

1) pass the test
2) Submit results to me
3) We reposte to the secure waiver website @ USCGA
4) The Doc, based on his workload and presence for duty, will reconsider and make the decision. That decision will be sent to you via letter and will be immediately provided to Admissions. It will then be provided to DoDMERB to post on the DoDMERB website.:thumb:

Laxmom4boys, I though I saw a packet being given to a young man while we were in the gym Thursday. I know he's very happy now! See you both again June 28.
