USCGA Class of 2024 Appointment Thread

The handbook says that wisdom teeth need to be removed by June 1st. I’m not sure that we are going to be able to do that. Will they do it at the Academy?
They can take them out at the Academy - they schedule an appointment with a local dentist as needed off campus grounds.

Concur with other posters. Unless things have changed, it is only a recommendation, not a requirement. If you're going to have it done at home, it needs to be done by 1 June. Otherwise, CGA and the Coast Guard will take care of removing them at some point during the cadet's time at the Academy. It is definitely nicer to get them out at home, when you can be completely comfortable and have more down time, but plenty of people have had it done at CGA. At Cape May (Coast Guard enlisted boot camp), they take them out during basic training and your back in training in no time. The Coast Guard is also aware that it's not a procedure that everyone can afford to pay for, maybe even more so now given the current situation. If it will help, don't hesitate to have you DS/DD reach out to Admissions about it (not you!).

I see many listed as undecided. Are there any academic questions?

May I suggest starting a new thread regarding academics at CGA? I have a feeling your expertise would be very welcome to people on this forum, but may get buried in this thread. There was a question regarding the Cyber Systems major a week or so ago if you can touch on that (general question about the major itself and how the implementation of the curriculum is going).

Not sure how many academy appointments will be available for the waitlisted candidates knowing that many appointments will be awarded to the prep-students.

I think that is incorrect logic. Prep students do not get priority for appointments over those that are on the waitlist. They have been offered prep for a reason. Every year you see some moved from prep to direct appointment but is very low numbers.

One moved from Prep to Direct Appointment on this forum so far

I was under the impression that when an applicant is offered Prep, they are already in the numbers for the following year (assuming they do well during their prep year). Ex. Preps (or CGAS) from 2019 will be joining this (2020) incoming group... Class of 2024.

I was trying to get an understanding of approximately how many appointments will be available for those students on the waitlist and how many students are currently on the waitlist.

I can't remember the numbers that were given in my daughter's initial acceptance letter. I think it said that 325 offers were made for what they hope will be a class of 265 cadets (does that sound about right for anyone that remembers?). So that means that first 60 people need to decline their offers before anyone will be selected from the waitlist. Obviously people are taken from the waitlist each year, but I have no idea how many. Someone with more experience on here might have stats from previous years.

Let’s not forget there were ‘Conditional’ offers that were likely included in that 325 number. Some of those Conditionals might not make it through the waiver process.

True. My daughter was initially a conditional, but she received her medical waiver. I don't know if there are any average stats on the number of conditionals that don't get the waiver or complete whatever else was required.

I don't have a dog in the fight, but I suspect yield (offer acceptances) will be up this year for economic reasons at all institutions with no or low(er) tuition.

I was told that 189 offers were made during EA so that would mean only 136 offers were given during RA. According to this thread 12 of the 69 offered will decline... That does not count the folks who will not be able to obtain a DODMERB waiver.... My guess is they will get into the waiting list.

PS
Congrats to all! I believe the USCGA is the hardest service academy to obtain an appointment! Well done!

My daughter checked her acceptance letter so I wanted to correct myself. The letter says "we will tender fewer than 350 appointments to yield an incoming class of 265" so they did not give a specific number but my memory of 325 was a little low.

I was thinking 350, thanks for the confirmation!
