USCGA Class of 2024 Appointment Thread

Huh?!!! That is a stunner....I would talk to AO after holidays.
What area of the country are you from? A friend of mine and CGA grad told me that they try to get people from all parts of the country and that they get a lot of applicants from the east coast. He also said the fact that we're from CA is a plus. Perhaps your state is already over-represented. Just a guess.

Also, did your son attend AIM? I think I read that something like 50% of the appointees from past classes are aimsters.

I read the same. I have seen posts that say attending AIM doesn’t improve your chances of being offered an appointment but the statistics would seem to indicate otherwise.

Bad news for us this morning. DS rejected. Little surprised, but understand that the applicant pool is filled with great candidates. DS has 3.95 unweighted, class rank 3 of 210, 1400 SAT, 230 PFE, Boys State, Varsity Football Captain x2, Honor Society President, FFA, District school board student rep, outside employment, community service, great recs, interview went very well (we thought).

DS is taking it much better than us. Congratulations to all those selected and their families. We know this is a long road...
For those of you saying “rejected” are you saying full-out rejected, or just didn’t get EA and deferred to RD?

I don't know who told you that but it just isn't correct. My DS had several visits to the Academy and knew what it was about, however AIM gives people a very realistic experience of what Swab summer is like. IMO that is invaluable for these young men and women to understand what they are getting into and also give the academy the opportunity to see how these possible future cadets will handle the experience.

to be clear, he did apply to AIM and was not accepted.

I am a CGA graduate. The person who told me that was an active duty Captain on campus.

the idea that your son has those attributes and was rejected is outrageous.

i know that others were accepted without those qualifications.

why?

DS was rejected. SAT of 1350 (680/670). 3.8 GPA. Lots of honors classes. Two AP classes including calculus. Varsity football and baseball. School musical. Letter from Academy staff/coach on file. Catholic prep school with lots of leadership. Third generation coast guard, fifth generation veteran. Totally stunned.

For the kids accepted, did any of you have lower scores? Trying to get my head around why a kid like this was rejected?
I understand your disappointment, I hope your DS applied to other academies and has success his stats sound phenomenal!

Great question; but things happen for a reason. We have faith that things will work out in the end. He has already been awarded NROTC and AFROTC scholarships. Hoping for good news from USNA or USAFA. Bottom line, we are blessed with a great kid, who is growing into a fine young man who wants to serve our nation.

We are from PA as well. My DS was Mayor of Haas City at Boys State. I wonder if they met?
Ha, he was the City Manager of Lewis City...likely they did. He enjoyed the experience but came back saying he was 100% certain that he did not want to ever pursue a career in politics - Smart kid!

It amazes me how these SA’s can even choose between so many highly qualified candidates. Their job must be tough. So proud of all these kids who have dedicated their HS years to this dream of attending a SA and serving their country. I had no idea what was involved when we started this whole process. I am sure your DS will be successful and end up in the right spot in the long run.

Can some of the folks who were accepted help me out? I am seeking to understand if any SAT scores were below 1300. Would really appreciate if you could provide gender and race. I was told by people on campus that congressional pressure has made it extremely tough on white males to get accepted. Curious if that is BS.

anybody get accepted with an SAT below 1300?

As a data reference, here are some links to class profiles, as well as a typical class profile. If the median SAT score is X, then there have to be some scores below the median, of course. The SAT score is just one contributing factor in the whole scoring algorithm.

Below 1300 = No
Gender = Male
Race = American
Conclusion = BS

I for one am very uncomfortable with this. You are only looking at 3 data points to try and draw a conclusion. Asking for gender and race could lead down a very slippery slope. If you want feedback on the decision the best person to ask is his AO.
