Updated #30 Declined - DS will attend USAFA

The feed kept popping up on my Facebook today. I'm not sure I liked it... It's high pressure for swabs, but even higher pressure for the cadre. They're going to make mistakes (that's part of learning). Not sure the live feed helps with that.

I just went through the Facebook page to watch a couple of the live feed videos. I agree that this puts a little bit more pressure on both the cadre and swabs, but I'm not sure the cadre were even thinking about the live feed. If I had been in their position, I would have been more concerned with not screwing up in front of Academy leadership, even if the current Superintendent is a great, down-to-earth individual.

In terms of the ceremony itself, I actually like it and don't think it would be out of place in non-COVID times. The parents still get that opportunity to see their DS/DD take the oath and swabs still get to have that public acknowledgement of their decision to serve, but it happens at the beginning of R-Day, rather then the end. I always thought making swabs go through Day One with yelling and constant demands and then pulling them out of that environment for a ten minute goodbye at the end of the day was a terrible decision. It yanks them out of the mental state they need to be in to develop that resiliency the SAs are seeking to teach future officers and just serves as a distraction.

As a side note, I did notice the lack of urgency shown by several of the swabs when the time came for them to form back up. In one case, one swab took their time and was about a 45 seconds behind the rest of their fellow swabs. That's not the case at the end of a "normal" Day One, where most swabs are anxiously checking their watches and bolting back to their company as soon as the time comes to do so. I'm sure the swabs will adjust to moving with a purpose in time. ;)

Obviously they had to do things differently this year. Each swab was only allowed 2 guests, which is the main reason they did the live feeds of the swearing in ceremonies, so that other family could still watch. Also, as you saw, each platoon reported and was sworn in separately to help with social distancing. Almost as soon as everyone from the platoon was there, the swearing in started. We dropped our daughter off and less than 30 minutes later the swearing in was starting. That is why the swabs are all in civilian clothes and why some weren't standing the correct way or probably didn't show the urgency you describe. The yelling started later that same day though :)

My comments on movement were not meant as a criticism, merely an observation and an amused observation at that. It is both interesting and fun to note the differences from year to year as leadership changes, time passes, or major events such as COVID-19 impact the idea of what is "normal." It's particularly fun to note the differences with other alumni, such as @LineInTheSand , who would likely tell you there were differences between his swab summer and mine. I've actively participated in three Day Ones (or R-Days as there were called in my time) and observed a fourth. All of those were without a pandemic, and they each had differences between them. If you read my paragraph before the one you quoted, you'll note I actually like yesterday's format and think it would serve well for future Day Ones. I certainly didn't expect that any of the incoming class other then the prior enlisted, prepsters, and potentially Aimsters to stand at attention or move in a "military fashion" a mere 30 minutes into their first day of military service. Even then, it certainly isn't a requirement when swab summer hasn't even officially started. As you indicate, those things come in time and with training. I have every bit of faith in the Class of 2022 to properly instruct the swabs and apply that same faith to the Class of 2024, who I'm sure will adapt and do their best to meet every training objective set out for them.

I'm glad they did the live feed, and I'm sure this is another element that will continue for future swab summers. My only future gripe with that would be if they started live streaming the actual training occurring within Chase Hall and throughout swab summer. In that context, it would absolutely act as a distraction. I doubt that is something USCGA is considering (or at least, I hope not).

I hope you were able to enjoy the day and watch with pride as your DD took her first steps towards becoming a CG officer. RADM Kelly is an incredible leader and I'm sure their plan for ROM and the rest of the summer will ensure all of the Class of 2024 remains safe and healthy. I endured the Swine Flu swab summer of 2009 and spent some time in quarantine myself so this is not entirely new to USCGA. They will be fine. :)
