USCGA Class of 2024 Rejection Thread

@TexasAggie204 When I read about the sacrifices your son made for his country I find it upsetting that colleges still consider ROTC tuition payments a scholarship. It is loan with a potentially high interest rate.

Sacrifices, maybe - but he met the best friends a person could have and will always be proud of what he did for his country and how much he accomplished at school. Oh yeah, and maybe soon he'll put that good ol' VA mortgage to good use.

My nephew graduated with a degree in aerospace engineering from a highly ranked college. He wasnt top of the class, but no slacker either.

He sent resumes to the East to West coasts. For two years. While he lived at home and worked as a grocery bagger and started paying his maybe $60k or more in student loans.

The guaranteed employment after graduation isn’t a bad deal, either. I don’t look at it as being a non-scholarship. It’s a good gig if you can get it.

DS / rejected on 12/21/2019 / he is reaching out to USCGA admissions to discuss Self-prep & re-apply options for next year.
Update...DS has been accepted into Tulane, Georgia Tech, VMI, Norwich, Citadel. He has decided to attend Georgia Tech.

DS spoke to Capt Freddie who told him to reapply next year for RA, I guess Georgia Tech on the application next year is great. Capt Freddie told him nothing is wrong with his application, just that it is a small admissions number and he was on the bubble.

It will be interesting to see if my DS decides to reapply. Georgia Tech is great school.

Georgia Tech is a terrific school. If it were me or my son, I'd be reluctant to give that up TBH. I believe they also have all three ROTC programs on campus.

how does one get a 4.6?

how does one get a 4.6?
Weighted is with the honors and AP classes, I’m assuming. Our DS went to two different HSs. First HS was unweighted and the current one is weighted. Dropped his class rank down because new school does not convert previous Honors/AP grades to their weighted system. Thus the life of a military brat.

For instance, at my son's school, earning an "A" in an AP class will get you 5.5 quality points - a "B" in the same class will get you 4.5 quality points. This is all on a 4.0 scale, hence these huge Weighted GPA numbers. I'm kind of caught between agreeing with this calculation method or just straight unweighted GPA which would be 4 points for an "A" and 3 points for a "B". My son does say, the AP courses are significantly more difficult than the regular "Academic" courses a lot of his buddies take, but does this weighting go too far???

I still can’t wrap my head around the comparison between the 4.0 system and the 100 system.

If someone has a 100 average in every AP class - they will earn a 4.0 unweighted and a 5.5 weighted in every AP class. As would a student with a 95 average for instance.

So the system seems flawed. I prefer the 100 system.

5.5???? Is that a thing?

That's ridiculous and further telling of why this process takes so long. I've never heard of getting 1.5 extra points for an A. 4.0 for regular class A and 4.5 for AP A is normal. Good grief. So in Texas you can just take all AP classes and get Cs in all and have a 3.5? Nuts

I think that admissions at SA's and civilian colleges are very familiar with the inconsistencies of HS grading systems and that's why they either ask for (or already have) each school profile which should help them navigate through the different systems in place.
Honestly, we never put much credence in overall GPA whether weighted or unweighted with our kids. We told them to "take hard classes" and "make good grades" - simple yes, but easy to follow. We've had very good success with that approach.

Pretty sure SAs and most other colleges re-calibrate GPA based on the transcript and HS profile so they are comparing apples to apples.
A 91 in some states might be a 3.67 vs a 4.0 or a 4.1 or a 91. A few years ago, a 91 would have been a 3.0 in my state before they went to the 10 points per grade.

So let’s add in a child that has moved 2-3 times in their middle and high school career (Military). One school does unweighted and another is weighted. The new school that is weighted will not convert those Honors/AP grades from unweighted to weighted. Class rank and GPA has now dropped at new school. #2 in class previously has now dropped to #42. Busted his butt to bring his class rank up to the top 10% in the last few years. Just wish there was some consistency given in regards to kids who have to switch schools. I’m sure the SA are scratching their heads on DSs transcript. 😂 #resilient #armybrat

Yup our grading scale sucks here 100-92 is an A 91-85 B 84-76 C etc where as down the rd in the other high school is 100-90, 89-80, 79-70 etc

I dont understand the rationale behind this. That seems lazy and inept. If you moved from a district that gave 1.5 (as above) points for AP, would they have left in the bonus points?
