What does "undecided" mean in the column that identifies the major? Isn't everyone supposed to declare a major in order to apply?

Undecided means they haven’t accepted their appointment yet. Many applicants apply to more than one service academy and may be waiting for all decisions before choosing which to accept.

Yes but that wasn’t the question. Some have put undecided as their Major but during the application process you have to state your intended Major.

Coast Guard Academy is tracking whatever applicant listed as their first choice for major on their application. CGA Admissions utilizes majors listed on application as a selection criteria for admission offers -- USMA, USNA and USAFA do not.

Sorry I misread. Looking back at the start of the list though, a couple people did not list their major, somehow when the list was just redone, undecided was put there instead of ??? or not reported. I thought that was one of the interesting things about CGA that you are selected with a specific major. There is some opportunity to change majors once there, but it is a competitive process as limited spots may be available for certain majors.

I’m interpreting the post at issue to be that of someone who is reluctant to share both major and state with the forum. For CGA, a major is declared during the application process. Last time I checked XX was not a state abbreviation either.

I understand if you don’t happen to know the answer to this, but are certain majors more selective than others? I chose cyber systems, so would they judge particular parts of my application harder than if I selected a different major? Or are they just looking to fill up the class roster with an equal distribution of the majors? Would selecting a certain major have made me seem “more desirable” for an appointment? (All hypothetical, my application has been complete for a few months now.)

It would depend on how many people apply for each major. Obviously the academy wants to ensure it can provide officers that will fill the requirements of the Coast Guard when they graduate. So I am sure they have an idea of how many cadets they want for each major. Having said that selecting one major over another doesn’t restrict what role you take when you graduate.

First and foremost, congrats! I’ll do my best to take a stab at it, but I know not the secrets of admissions.

Majors definitely vary in competitiveness as there are a certain number of spots in each major based on equipment limitations, building space etc. and some are more popular than others. That being said, applicants shouldn’t try game the system, as major is only one of many puzzle pieces in the admissions process. It was once rumored that if you chose an engineering major you’d have a better shot. But I believe that’s been put to rest as it’s not the case.

Last summer when I reviewed my app with CAPT Fredie after being waitlisted he said that Mech Eng was the most popular followed by MES for the class of 2024. I had applied for MES and because it was so competitive I asked if I should change intended major when I reapplied. In my case he told me not to, because applicants are considered equally for both their first intended major and the one they chose as a backup or alternative, at least for the class of 2025. And a genuine interest in the major will give you a leg up.

Your high school records and standardized scores determine your competitiveness for a major. So, for example if you’re really bad at math but apply for an engineering major, it’s likely someone else who thrives in math would get the spot when compared. I don’t know what they look for specific to the Cyber major but yes, they’ll look for success and experiences in different areas in one major more so than if you chose a different major. Think specifically high English scores for Gov, high math and science for engineering, business classes or experience in high school for management, etc..

At the end of the day, having a genuine interest and a strong academic history relating to your major and talking about it in application essays will make you the most desirable. This is, of course, in addition to all the other puzzle pieces involved.

Coast Guard requires more engineering type majors so there are more slots in each class for engineering majors -- Cyber is part of this group -- nearly 80% of admissions last year were STEM majors.

There are drastically less slots for Government and Management majors. Class of 2024 only had 22 Management majors out of 272 admissions -- barely over 8%.

My DD got her BFE today. Pretty cool package with the formal appointment letter. Maybe the second batch of letters going out now?
Congrats! Did she receive a phone call before she received the envelope?

My daughter said they accept less Management and Government majors to begin with because they know that several cadets will switch from a stem major into one of those 2 non-stem majors during the first year. After the first year, there isn't much opportunity to switch.

AO has told my DS that it is much easier to switch between STEM majors or Govt/Management major to a STEM major.

If you start Academy as a STEM major then only under special circumstances will you be approved to change from STEM to Govt/Management major.

Sorry for the confusion. When I listed our kid, I didn't realize major was part of the listing. She was one of the first ones on the list and has always had a major declared. MES. She got the call from coach early Nov, verbally committed, and her packet just came a few weeks ago. I got very excited and threw her up on the list and never modified it when people stared listing majors soon after, I should have.

It looks like there are 89 members of the class of 2025 facebook group, and there are 46 members of this group that have been offered admission. Do the longtime members of this forum think this 50% representation is accurate? So have only 89 spots been offered as a result of the EA process?

50% seems high. Last year was around 20% with 70 appointments reported here and around 350 appointments tendered overall.
And I don’t believe everyone who was offered an appointment in EA has joined the Facebook group.
