USCGA Medical/Application Question

Is it normal for this academy in particular to first view applicants/candidates applications first, then decide if they want to pursue certain applicants and sub-sequentially want to look at the candidate's medical DoDMERB status?

It seems like other academies look at medical status while simultaneously (when possible/both information is available) looking at the applicant's file to determine if they want to offer appointments.

Is this true? If so why? I apologize in advance if this question is worded in a weird way.

My understanding is the following but not sure if this answers your question.

1) USCGA will request DODMERB medicals for candidates they feel are competitive.
2) When deciding on whether to make an offer a candidate's medical status is not considered. Many times the outcome of the medical will not be known anyway.

Reason for different selection process: My understanding is that CGA is more selective because it takes a special kind of person to be a Coast Guardsmen. Consider these factors: (a) limited number of slots available (1/4 size of other SAs) b) match the "needs of the service" c) humanity aspect in addition to serving the country and d) limited money budgeted for medical reviews. It is helpful to have the other military branches initiate the medical reviews so that they are "footing the bill". It's almost strategic that the CGA app did not open till August; well after the others had been open. Smart and Thrifty. If the portfolio doesn't match what they are looking for, they have not spent precious time and resources going through the medical review papers. Hope this answers your 2-part question.

So if the uscga actually does review a dod medical, it means you are competitive? Any stats on how competitive (like a percentage)?

My understanding is that USCGA only request medicals for candidates they assess as being competitive. I don’t have any stats on the percentage that they request medicals for who then go on to receive appointments.

An applicant has to demonstrate merit as a potential candidate, to be selected for a DoDMERB medical. That is still an Admissions “screening.” More information and documents come in during that process.

If DoDMERB DQd later on, Admissions determines if an applicant is competitive for an offer of appointment, by a more in depth review, with now more information. If so, they will direct the Senior Medical Officer to conduct medical waiver consideration.

So if a candidate is fully qualified, that would increase a person's chances of admission, correct?

As opposed to not fully qualified...certainly😁

So if by now in March 20th and you haven't been asked to have DoDMERB examination you probably aren't competitive right?

It would be much better if they requested you undergo an exam. There is almost no time left to get examined and be qualified, much less work through a DQ. Keep working hard on plan B,C, D, etc. Until you get that TWE, there is still hope.

BP9957976 OR.... you contact your Admissions representative and ask: "I have not been asked to undergo a DoDMERB exam. Am I not competitive enough? If not, can you tell me the areas I need to beef up when I reapply?"
