USCGAS Thread

Well, my daughter received the news she’d been praying for...a Direct Appointment to the USMMA. She is accepting it.

I wish everyone the best of luck and I know all of the scholars will kill it in the coming years.

Don’t forget I’m from Alabama. We’ve visited MMI and I’m happy to give advice on things to do in our great state, if y’all ever need it 😊

Does anyone have any insight into the status of the CGAS waiting list? I thought I saw that 99 spots were being offered, but I don't know the number on the waiting list. It wouldn't really make much sense for that to be more than 99 since it will never get to that point. Assuming 80% acceptance, that would leave just under 20 waiting list spots to be offered. I'm not sure what the acceptance rate is but 80-85% seem to be what is generally stated as rules of thumb for academy offers. 85% would roughly leave about 14. Any idea if those offers have already been made or when they will be made? It may just be a rolling process as offers are extended and then later accepted or declined. Are those offers to be accepted by 1 May or how does that work? Thanks.

Congrats to your daughter! If you don't mind my asking, what was her intended major for the coast guard academy?

An email that went out to those offered USCGAS said they were awaiting for 12 more responses, this was maybe two weeks ago. April 15 was the deadline for them to respond. Not sure if this helps or not.

Thanks for the response. That's very interesting. I think it's an incredibly hard job that the admissions people at USCGA do and they do it well - so kudos to them!! I really appreciate @Objee, and all he and the others do. Unfortunately, the numbers just did not go in my DS's favor this time, but he was kept in the game until the bitter end,so we feel good that the USCGA did keep trying to find a way to get him in. So we are grateful for the opportunity, and wish all the best to the USCGA staff and faculty, USCGA cadets and USCGA scholars in all their future endeavors.

At the MMA, she will major in Marine Transportation. She wants to sail on her license for a few years before settling down. At USCGA, she chose Government and Management. Once DD sails away from the ship side of things, she’s interested in working her way up on the business and management side of a port. We live in a port city and she’s fortunate to have mentors associated with the port that have helped her outline her future. When she emailed her AO with her decision, she told her there’s a possibility she might go CG upon graduation from MM. The CG mission is something that speaks to her servants heart. We shall see. A lot can change in 4 years.

*Sorry for the long winded answer* I just want to be clear that she could see herself going either way. She didn’t apply to any other SA’s.

@Deep South Mom - First of all, HUGE congrats!! I know you must be so proud! Second, I find your understanding of the situation to be more in depth than some on the Service Academy forum. I believe one of the things that I found most fascinating on this forum ( and going through this process alongside my DD) is that there is often a blind chasing of an “Academy”. I am most perplexed by those who applied to two totally different missions (ex: USCGA or USMA) Their missions are completely different on nearly every front. I have wondered what the end game was? Is it to be at an Academy, or an Officer - or love of a Specific Academy and the mission it serves? Of course, no judgement for anyone as each is on their own path. I have just always wondered about that. So - That being said, If your daughter’s goal is business side of Marine Transportation, USMMA is a brilliant choice. Being able to sail on the 3rd Mate License and get that extra sea time experience will be crucial. And, the money? Whew!! Big money and great world travelling! Incredible! I applaud her for knowing what each Academy brings to the table and being able to make the choice that is best for her. Best of luck to her as she begins the amazing adventure!!
