USCGAS Thread

I believe I have read that they typically make around 100 CGAS offers. While obviously the numbers here don't account for everybody, four seems like a very low number, particularly given the relatively high rate of people posting on the CGA appointment list. Anyway, long-winded way of asking if anyone knows whether they typically hold a lot of the CGAS offers until the end?

My DD received a USCGAS Appointment in EA and she is constantly in touch with others who have either received one as well or still waiting to hear. (They all met at AIM) I don’t think any of them are accounted for on this thread. Last week, two more received their offer of appointment. (scholars) A few of the others are still waiting. It seems to be an on-going process of notification and fairly random.

historically, yes.

My daughter received a phone call from her AO this morning with the fantastic news that she’s a Prep Appointee! Needless to say, our family is thrilled :) DD is a little shocked as she’d prepared herself for the worst the closer April 1 came with no word.

She submitted for EA but, upon the advice of her AO in November, she requested to be moved to RA because her ACT scores weren’t as high as they needed to be for EA or generally RA, based on what she was told. She’s not a great standardized test taker and we knew that would be her Achilles heel with both SA’s she applied to. So we’ve been hoping for Prep School since November but in a very cautiously optimistic manner.

I’m excited and proud of all of our DD’s and DS’s!

Very happy for you!

Congratulations @Deep South Mom!! That is so thrilling! I know you and your DD are over the moon!!! I absolutely remember how that felt when my DD got her call. It is indescribable! I think I cried for a full day! I hope you both enjoy this amazing moment! Kids don’t achieve these things alone - it takes years of parent support, patience, teaching and love. So - this is your day, too!! Take it all in!

My daughter was called and offered CGAS. We have until April 15 to decide if she will accept. To anyone you received this news earlier- what happens next in the process? I feel like she knows so little about everything right now. Do you go to each school for a visit or once she is given the information about what school she will attend, do you plan a visit then?

She will be assigned to one of the prep schools. You do not have a choice although you can express a preference. Normally you are informed of the prep school you will be attending by mid May although I think this year they are attempting to let you know sooner.

Hi momoftwo. I can hear the questions in your head, and I'm sure they are the same questions we had back in December when our son was given the USCGAS offer. To clarify, I am not at all an expert here, just a mom. We were confused and I'll say a little disappointed with the Scholar offer. But my son reached out to many people, including a current CG officer, and came to the conclusion that this is his way in to the USCGA. I'm sure the admissions department has seen enough applications, that something in my son's flagged him for prep. I think they know what it takes to be successful, and want each of the kids to succeed. So, we are considering this the CG's 5 year program for him and are embracing any prep school location they place him at. We are not planning on visiting any prep schools. We live far from any of them and I think it will be part of the experience to live someplace different for a year. I would encourage your daughter to reach out to an officer, look at the USCGAS facebook page, and do some online research. It didn't take my son long to realize what a gift this is. And, with our high school's difficulty in transitioning to remote learning, and my son's AP teachers struggling with technical difficulties, I think that this year particularly, my son will benefit from the prep experience. So our decision is made and he is wearing a Coast Guard t-shirt and hat proudly. Good luck to your daughter in making her decision!

My daughter Self prepped at MMI this year and she feels a lot more confident in starting the Academy next year. They did a great job of SAT prep and she was able to get another year of Physics and Chemistry under her belt. We really enjoyed travel to Alabama and seeing all the history around the school. I bet 9 out of 10 prep students are thankful for the opportunity to attend and feel like it made them a better student.

I actually just got my acceptance letter to MMI about 20 mins ago... while I haven't received a denial from CGA yet, I don't think my stats are quite high enough to be considered. With that being said, I'm super excited to attend MMI next year to prep for USCGA class of 2025. Is there anything in particular I should know or be prepared for at MMI?

Congrats on the acceptance to MMI and best of luck for the CGA!

Thank you. She just accepted her offer today and is spending time exploring all three schools. She is very nervous and scared. This will pass though. It's just a commitment but a bigger opportunity.

I am glad your daughter decided to join the other USCGA scholars. I know it was unsettling for my son at first, and he didn't know how to answer the all too often question, "Where are you going?" But after he made the decision and got comfortable explaining the Prep School, I think the nerves turned into excitement. His packet arrived yesterday and we started filling out the official paperwork. Hopefully your daughter will join the Scholars Facebook page. My son reached out to another track runner on the facebook page and now they are texting. The Facebook USCGA and USCGA SCHOLARS are both a great source of information. Also, on the USCGA website there is a SCHOLARS handbook you can download and all 3 prep locations are linked. I'm excited for all the scholars to get to the Academy this summer and begin their journey!

Thank you- she doesn't belong to facebook but I joined the page. I think she is involved with a snapchat group of others who have accepted also. Also- two of her fellow AIMsters have also accepted their invite to scholars.
