My DS was just awarded a 4-year AFROTC scholarship. He has taken 12 AP courses and they will give him ~50 credits towards his undergraduate study. He is going to UMass Amherst CS major this Fall. They offer a 5-year BS/MS program like some universities do. He will have the opportunity to earn a MS degree in 4 years due to number of AP credits he has. Is AFROTC limited to undergraduate programs? Or he can use the 4-year scholarship for a BS/MS program?

This is the first time we have ROTC. I am so happy that we found this forum. Love people here, you all are so kind and helpful!

I am on the Navy side which has different rule sets. But I am wondering if the university has offered that his 50 credits will matriculate to his degree choice? I ask because I have Midshipmen show up with AP credits in subjects such as English Lit, History, Latin, etc. But they are a Tier 1 major. All of those credits won't apply to their degree.

He has likely already planned for this, but it's something to watch out for so there are no surprises.

Thank you! Yes my son carefully went through the course/graduation requirements and put together a 4-year plan. He is going to contact the school to find out if his course plan works and whether/how his AP credits apply. It does sound too good to be true :)

My own guess is he can pull it off if he meets the requirements of both the BA and MA during his final semester. I'm sure his unit can give him a definitive answer. I'd reach out to them.

Yes, he will reach out to the unit too. I hope it works :)
